AC trouble, of course when it's starting to get hot in Phoenix
#21
New compressor installed and blowing 41°F thru the vents......$1,125.00
There are cheap compressors on Ebay from China, but this one is manufactured by a Denmark co. called Nissens. $400 thru the shop. Check the link!

Apparently my AC clutch burned up bc of a small guage wire that feeds current (amps) to the clutch to engage it. The mechanic said this wire was far to small guage to last.
I've had the car 5 years and this is the first failure I've had with the AC. Altho, I have had some false starts in the past where the AC blows hot until I restart it.
So, in addition to replacing the compressor and recharging the system, and checking for leaks, He re-wired the harness that feeds the AC clutch with heavier wire and solder (no crimped butt joints). He also found that the fuse in the AC spot was a 30A and not a 10A as prescribed in the owner's manual. The thin wire and over rated fuse are from the previous owner. Today we returned the fuse to a 10A and put in larger guage wire, but how far back can you go?
Works great so far, the shop is in South Scottsdale, AZ. it has a very uninteresting name, "Car Repair Company" but, they do good work and they charge for it. The hourly shop rate is $114/Hr. This place is actually about one mile from my house, but tucked behind a bank and a smoke shop (:

A few pics of the damage:
Fried AC clutch that got so hot it left the disc red in color
Clutch oil splattered in the area
Bottom of old compressor
A few pics of the replacement:
What can I say? This was a big expense, but it will last into my 200K miles range. I have 129,000 miles to date.
