Default Audio System Illumination

The car is fitted with a standard Jaguar audio system - CD player variant. It's almost impossible to see the clock display and I suspect it's down to a backlight bulb problem. Anyone know how to get the front panel off the audio system unit?

TIA

When I got my car it came with a working radio, but no display at all. I do have a back light as it adjusts with the dimmer pot by the light switch. You should try that too.

I ordered a used radio when i did not find and info on this problem on line. I will rip it apart to see how it works when my replacement comes in.

Larry,

Thanks for the response. The dimmer is at full brightness already. All the other displays are easily readable - including the radio channel information at the bottom of the screen - so I'm guessing the problem with the illumination of the top of the screen is a dead or discoloured bulb.

I await with interest the results of the dismemberment of your old radio.

Cheers.

If you replace bulbs, replace them with LED bulbs. Never have to do it again!

Larry-Cleveland,

Did you ever get your replacement radio and work out how to replace the backlights by dismembering the dead one?

Cheers.

Hi,
I would quite like to know the answer to this problem too as mine is the same, although it is quite a common moan so, I'm wondering if it is just a design fault.
It is annoying at night though, as I can't read the time or anything else on the display.

After doing a bit of reading, I have come to the conclusion that this led should work as the climate control one does, even with the audio unit turned off it still indicates the time, so should mirror the climate one regarding illumination.
It seems to be a very common fault but a fault nevertheless, so Larry, soon as you get around to investigating I will be all ears.
I wish I had one to strip down, I want to get to the bottom of this.

This doesn't seem to really be that common of an issue, as this seems to be the only tread I can remember discussing this. Don't know that I would call this a design fault either as these cars have been around since 2002 and if the unit is lasting 10+ years or so (depending on your car) that is pretty good reliability overall. As nice as so many X Types still might be, they are starting to get pretty long in the tooth and more and more things are probably going to start wearing out.

Understand what you mean Alfa, but when you own one and something is amiss your goal is for it to be right, how it should be, and It is a bit annoying at night too.
I'm convinced it should be backlit and legible. As the climate control is, And that is how it was designed to be, otherwise people would have kicked off and something would have been done about it.
Regards

Mine sometimes works, sometimes is dim
Sometimes doesn't work at all.
Doesn't bother me, so the next owner can fix it.. lol

I suffer the same awful affliction, lol. If there is an easy fix for this I am all for it.

I know that some displays (not LCD's though) gradually dim with time due to capacitors going bad. Apparently they can easily be "recapped" to work as new again.

I have no idea if there are any capacitors involved in the lighting of the display.
