Default Car clicks, but won't start

I posted in my build thread as well, but this could very well be a problem other may or have had so I'll start a new thread as well.

This is where we're at. All the signs pointed to a possible battery issue so I took it to AutoZone and had them test and charge it. It came back good. When when put it back we had the same result. All lights come on and work, but all we get is a little clicking noise. There does not seem to be fuel pressure either. Another clue may be the traction control button flashes red.

So far we've
Charged and tested the battery (it's good)
cleaned all battery grounds
swapped relays
checked all fuses
tested the starter by jumping it at the relay and at the starter (seems good)

Ideas which way this rabbit may have turned?

Confirm this as No Crank No Start? Have you tried jump start?

Yes, no crank and no start. I also tried to jump it, but no change.

P1638 says the car will not (be allowed to) start

It's worth getting the workshop manual and looking the codes up...

However, on some of the cars I think with that code it would crank. Don't know on X-Types. Check workshop manual.

+1 on the P1638 code not allowing engine to start. P1603 is TCM/EEPROM malfunction. I don't think it's battery or starter. The three C codes are rear wheel speed sensor problem, so shouldn't block engine start.

Thank you. I have been focusing in on P1638 and found a lot of research. The issue is that that code covers a lot of potential issues and doesn't really hone in on a specific part, like a MAF or something. I did learn that when the security light blinks it's giving you a code, the number of blinks that can narrow the search down a bit. That's my next bit of exploration. I also downloaded the shop manual as well. We'll see what we come up with. If any other suggestions pop up please share.

Great news for this update. The X-Type is back up and running!!! So after trying to take it to a dealer only to have them refuse to even look at it we found a local independent specialist. It turns out that the cluster was bad. This was one of our original suspicions and the tests at the OBDII did confirm it, but it required taking it to a shop for programing. We also still suspected that it could be that, PATS, or possibly a short that we missed.

Hi Lemons,

Can you elaborate on a bit about the cluster? How were you able to pull the codes without the car starting? Did the check engine light come on after it failed to start?

if you search around the forum there is an S-Type electrical trouble shooting guide. I actually found it while searching for an X-Type one, but it works for both cars. You get the ohns from the various pins in the obd2. Depending on what it reads tells you where the communication failure i .
