what exactly has the service centre told you is wrong with the gearbox?

Was the car running ok prior to this? No strange symptoms? no signs of oil leaks prior to this?

Can you get any fault codes from the garage an post them on the forum

All this aside... $7200 seems excessive.... you should be able to get a transmission thru ebay substantially cheaper... if indeed it is a complete transmission failure.

Are we talking auto or manual.... I'm guessing auto.

$7200? Outrageous. If your X was part of the original NON-RECALL (yes that's right, there never was an actual recall on the '02/03 auto boxes, it was a customer initiated program) have the dealer run your VIN and see if you got an updated Jatco somewhere along the way. If not, get the dealer started with your campaign to have it replaced. May get you nowhere but don't pay $7200 for that job. Take it elsewhere. A really good tranny shop should still be able to do it for far less. IMHO and no offense to our dealer techs.

If our techs can attest to this price AND it only being a dealer repair, my X-Type goes up for sale today while she's purring purfectly.

I agree with the above. If that's the going rate for a new trans I'll get rid of mine sooner than later. I don't think it is though, I seem to recall $3-4k being the number. In the back of my mind I'm know that the trans will probably go on mine at some point and maybe the transfer case as well. I'll certainly put a new one in for 3-4k but anything more would be ridiculous.

hello guys,

Here I am back with a question for all the techs:

Yesterday, my baby-Jag showed on display, "Engine failure/Gearbox failure".
I have tried few times to restart de car turning the key off and on and finally got to normal. Got home and decided to take it first time in the morning to the dealership.
In the morning same problem, it was needed to try over 20 times to have a normal dash screen and be able to drive it to the dealership.

Finally they have called me and told me that the codes are P1251 and 1753 and that I need a new ECM that will cost me $2800.

If someone can help me with some info I will kindly ask him to share his thoughts with me.

Also, in the front, right under the vehicle (passanger side, you can find right behind the plastic cover that is under the bumper two shapes like a pencil, each of them having a screw in top. One was leaking small spots in my garaj with a yellow liquid. The dealership said that is the AC compressor and that I need one. I was thinking that maybe just the screw needs to be replaced or the washer. they are saying that I need a new AC compressor that will cost me $1900.

Any thoughts in this one too?

I thank you very much!

$7200 for a new tranny???? The car isnt even worth that much as a whole.

This dealer is trying to take you for a ride, definitely go elsewhere if you can.

Tracus, as for your ECM issue, if the dealership has diagnosed it as an ECM, I am not in a position to question it. Granted, look on E-bay and see what you can find there. I saw one on there for an 03 Jag that was $111 with free shipping (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/03-JA...Q5fAccessories). If that doesn't fix your problem, then I would be looking at your throttle body. That seems to be another common failure item with our cars and it can cause the same symptoms that you are seeing. Granted, normally the throttle body is associated with a "No Cruise Available" warning too.

If you need some guidance on how to change out the ECM, let me know. I will give you what info I have.

Sorry about the long delay. Been working 12 hour days, 6 days a week and it doesn't leave a lot of time with dealing with the family. So, I take what time I can. HOpefully this will get you going in the right direction.

^If it's the throttle body that needs to be replaced, you're looking at an $1800 bill if you have the dealer do it.

Hi guys,

I am coming back with the results.
The technician tried to replace the throtle body, the relay, etc and no change. Finally he decided to disconect the plug from the ECM, clean it and plug it back. After this operation everything is back to normal.

Does somebody knows or have a picture with the location of this ECM? I would like to know where is it and how you can access it.

Thermo, I would like to thank you very much for your help! Anytime I was in trouble, you helped me a lot !

Thank You ufoz8mycow for your thoughts as well!

Happy Easter everyone!
