Help - 02 X-Type serious issues
Hi folks,
I have a 2002 X-Type 3.0 with auto trans that we bought new in 2002. The car has < 48,000 miles and has sat in the garage for the past 4 years. I detailed the exterior and interior and it sat un-used. I decided to get it out again and the battery was completely dead. So, I got a replacement from SAMS and installed. Here are the symptoms:
1. The motor cranks but will not start.
2. No error codes on LCD display
3. I checked the immobilizer switch on passenger side foot well.
4. I can not get the gear shift lever out of park to have it towed to dealership.
Any help from this point would be greatly appreciated.

AJ: To shift your X-Type out of Park, open the J-Gate as shown in this thread:
How to repair annoying click from auto J-gate with pictures
You'll find a U-shaped piece of black plastic holding the shifter in the Park position. This "U" needs to rotate clockwise to shift out of Park. But the rotation is blocked by another piece of black plastic to the left of the "U". Push down on the black plastic blocking the "U" from rotating, and now you can shift it out of Park.
Of course, this solution is temporary. This safety interlock keeps the transmission in Park until the driver simultaneously presses the brake and turns the ignition key to the run position. Evidently your X-Type "thinks" (incorrectly) that either the brake is not pressed, or the key is not in the run position. Since the car cranks but won't start, I suspect the ignition system. Check the fuel pressure just to rule that out. The pressure should climb to 40-50 psi after you turn the key from off to run a few times to energize the fuel pump.
Good luck. Work through this, and you'll have a nice, low mileage X-Type to admire and enjoy.

Thanks dwclapp. I will give it a go to get the car out of park.
Paul,
That was my initial thought. There is just under 3/4 of a tank of gas in it and the gas is at least 3 years old. I want to change out the fuel filter but I can't get under the car due to the trans not coming out of park. Once I get it able to move I can get it up in the air and get under it to put in a fresh filter, drain the tank and start over.

Have you checked the under bonnet fuses?
Not really related to the above, but;
I had the same problem with my Land Rover.
Sat for years, head gasket. Would crank like hell but not start after my fixin.
I could jump the ignition hot in the fuse box and she would run great.
Never found the cause, bad computer? Memory blanks?
