Default This kitty won't purr! AKA won't crank/start

Hi bros I'm a newbie to this forum. I just bought a 02 x-type 2.5 shtick shift against a veteran jag mechanics advice. I bought it as is which is not cranking and def not starting. I'm a electrical troubleshooting veteran in the commercial and manufacturing environment. So far a new battery fully charged. If I dejacket the starter relay and manually close the engine cranks nice. Ignition switch tests out good on all positions at the switch itself. Clutch interlock switch tests good when depressed. Obd2 has a 1638 as its only code and immediately returns when cleared. Last guy had the cluster out and so did I but its back in with no bent pins. Where to go from here? The schematics were a world of help as they guided me to deliver this info. Help.

Have you checked the fuses and that there is fuel being delivered?

Have you checked PATS to ensure that is not preventing the vehicle from starting?

I checked all under hood fuses and the ones inside that were labeled like they may have a bearing on the problem. My fuel pressure tester doesn't fit this port but I'll get one that does. It shot out gas when depressed though. As for the PATS I'm not sure how to proceed. It appears to be communicating via a network signal first SCP then CAN. can you assist in PATS troubleshooting? Thanks in advance.

What was the reason for the 'veteran Jag mechanic' recommending against purchasing this vehicle?

Does the PATS light on the top of the dash flash or stay on when you are attempting to start the vehicle?

Use the search feature to find several threads concerning PATS operation on this forum.

The vet said these suck like no tomorrow. Do not buy and if they gift take right to the junkyard. I like them as a awd option. The pats light is on the console attached to a coin holder is it not? The battery is at 5.3 volts and charging so I'll post tomorrow afternoon with the PATS light story. It was off as I recall on last start attempt at cranking. Thanks for your time and effort. If you ever come to pa I'll show you a good time.

Many mysterious electrical problems with these vehicle is caused by a failing or weak battery. If you do not know the age of the battery, it may be best to save considerable time and effort with diagnosis and replacing parts to change the battery.

You must be psychic. The smart charger has claimed the battery bad. They are hard to get in my area at a good price. The battery supply house opens on Monday morning. I'll pick one up once way home from work.

Still getting the dashes on the odometer? If so, that's a clue.

There still there. It seems the start request isn't granted. Not sure if all info is reaching ECM. Crank request is at starter relay but ECM isn't grounding the relay. I'm looking into pats holding it back.

After putting the key in and turning to run all pats light activity ceases. Even in crank there is no activity on the pats light.

NBCat if your still watching battery was ok just charger said it was bad. I found my car in another thread that gave up and sold it. I just realized it as I was looking for the pats info you suggested me to search for. I found my cars story to the "T" and asked questions that never got answered. So the battery's over 12.6 and the pats light isn't barking. Where too?

I may be wrong, but I think if it was just a PATS issue, you wouldn't have the dashes in the odometer. I think you may need to get the ecu reflashed.

You need to begin with the basics and check all electrical connections, fuses and earth points.
