Harry, lets start with figuring out what kind of bulb that you have. You don't state the year car that you have and you seem confused as to whether you have HID lighting or the standard halogen lighting.

As for figuring out what type of lighting you have, open up the driver's door and if you look in at the hinge area, do you see a silver/white sticker there that says something about "This vehicle is equipped with High Intensity Discharge ......"? The other check you can do is park with the car facing a wall. When you turn on your headlights, do then snap on or do they flash brightly then dim down and then over the course of say 10 seconds come up to full brightness. If they snap on, then you have halogen bulbs. If they change intensity, then you have HID.

The halogen bulbs have a simple wire hook that holds the bulb in place. You can push towards the front of the car gently and then move the hook to undo the latch. This will then allow the bulb to be pulled out after disconnecting the single wire plug.

If you have HIDs, you will find that after removing the cover on the back of the headlight housing, you will have a large black box filling the opening. You can give the box a slight twist and it will then be able to be pulled out. The bulb will be on the black box. This black box is the ballast. Just a warning, do not try messing with the bulb with the headlights turned on. At best you are going to have 85 VDC on the terminals. This will be enough to give you a good poke and make you twitch pretty good. But, these terminals can have up to 23,000 volts (yes, that high) on them (hence all the warning stickers). It isn't a problem as long as you leave the headlights off.

If you have halogen bulbs, then you will need a 55W H1 halogen bulb. If you have HID lighting, you will need to get your hands on a 35W D2S bulb (yes, 35W, if you install a 50/55W bulb into this socket, you risk damaging your ballast).

Yes! other headlights are HI except the outer low beam which as you state is HID (35W D2S bulb} Have access to it but it is stuck in the attached socket of the electrical lead........tried twisting /pulling but no luck todate

I am confused as to which bulb you are trying to change. In the outside lens there are 2 bulbs. The one closest to the fender is the turn signal. The next bulb is the DIP/Low Beam bulb.
The turn signal bulb just rotates a quarter turn counter-clockwise and bulb and holder comes out. The DIP/Low Beam, If HID, you turn the square box a quarter turn counter-clockwise to release it from the serrated mounting ring. The box is the bulb igniter and if you need clearance you can unplg the small connector and remove it completely. Once the igniter is out the ring can be turned a quarter turn counter-clockwise and the bulb removed.
The inner lens has a small bulb at the top of the fixture (daytime running) it is I believe a 5W55 bulb. The plug is inserted in the lens and to remove it you can twist it back and forth while pulling. It is very snug and hard to pull out. The bulb is a bayonet style and you can twist it side to side while pulling on it.
The final bulb is the high beam and it is an H1 bulb. It is held by to spring fingers. Remove the tension on them and the bulb and holder will come out.

Thanks to both of you for assisting a new owner {Jaguar X Series 2002}
I am indeed slow understanding the headlights! {Canadian /Scottish Twit}
........bright sunny days don't help!

If the two small bulbs in the inner headlight are the running lights these are OK! {automatically on with start up} but also automatically on with start up are what I think are the "low beam headlight bulbs?" {outer headlight /inner bulb} one of these has gone {bulb /fuse?) I can reach it but it is not coming out easily ...seems stuck in the electrical lead socket?

Question....
as Thermos says it looks like a *HID bulb with the coil up the length of the bulb .....SHOULD THE LOW BEAM AND THE DAYLIGHT RUNNING LIGHTS COME ON AUTOMICALLY AT START UP?....LOW BEAM seems to stay on?

re "low beam headlight bulbs?" *High Intensity Discharge (HID) Xenon light units, type D2S 35W
Any source to buy a replacement bulb.. on line $45-$150!
