I need to change my oil how difficult is the job and do I need to do anything special as far as tools go??

Any particular type of oil or filter I should stay away from??

Striker, as for an oil change, all you need is a 13mm wrench (as I recall), an oil filter wrench (small), and a container to catch the oil in. You will probably need a jack to get the front corner of the car up in the air some unless you are a very thin person.

Remove the oil fill cap, use the wrench to remove the drain plug. Once oil is done draining, reinstall the drain plug. Slide the container to under the filter and remove the filter. Wipe off extra oil from the sealing surface of the filter mount. Put about 0.5 quarts of oil into the filter and then install the filter. Add an additional 5 quarts of oil to the engine. Check level and add additional oil as needed to bring to the proper level on the dip stick.

As for brand of oil, almost all oils today are made today to meet all the specs that the manufacturers call for. As for using synthetic over conventional oils, there's tons of opinions on this. I did the synthetic bit for 1 oil change, conventional for another oil change, and I saw no difference in mileage between the two. I will let you make that decision. I am using Quaker State. As for filter, a lot of people will tell you to not use a Fram filter with our cars. Supposedly the Fram filter has a lot of fibers in it that come free and raise hell with your car. Most will tell you to go with a Motorcraft filter as this is the OEM filter (FL-420S).

Does the under carriage engine tray need to be removed to access the oil filter and or drain plug??

Under carriage engine tray? That's new to me. Just find your oil pan and trace back and you'll see the oil pan bolt. Really can't mess that one up, as it's the only bolt exposed.

 

you need to remove the air scoop that cools the transfer case, if it is there - one 10mm bolt.

 

Also, unless you are planning on running a quart and a half low, you will want to put in 6.9 quarts per the owners manual. I just dump in 7 quarts. Also, you will not be able to pour anywhere near half a quart in the filter. If you can even come close to that a lot of it will pour out when you go to screw it on.

 

its an easy 20 minute job. take off the oil fill cap and pull out the dipstick. do this first as i find that the oil will flow out faster. unscrew the pan screw and let it flow. when its empty, replace the pan screw. remove the filter and replace - hand tighten!! don't tighten with an oil filter wrench!! and fill 'er up. as for oil, i use a 5-30 synthetic, and i buy the walmart brand and the walmart brand filter. i know what you're thinking...but if you do your change every 4000 miles or so you'll be fine. as mentioned in a prior post, today's oils meet industry standards, so why spend $40 when you can do just as well spending $20? goog luck......

 

Damn!!! What a pain in the butt the filter was to get to!! I did it today and all went well. Everything went good except that damn filter!!!!!

Oh I went with Castrol Syntec 10w30 and a motorcraft fl400s filter...

 

I also use Castrol Syntec and sometimes Mobil 1. Owners manual prefers you use 5W 30 but 10W 30 will not hurt it. I know some will disagree. Don't you just hate it when the oil drips onto the exhaust when you remove the oil filter? There is no way around it like one of the other members mentioned in another thread. What I usually do is put a rag or towel near the pipe to at least catch some of the dripping. Just a weird spot for the filter.

Also I usually go with a K&N or Mobil oil filter. Love the nut at the bottom of the K&N, makes removing the filter a whole lot easier.

 

Not to hijack the thread. This is a question I also wanted to ask regarding oil changes. I have a 2.5 L engine and am curious as to why the 3.0 L also uses about the same amount of oil? I usually put in about 6.5 or 6.7 quarts and it's perfect.

 

Very similar engine that uses the same oil pan so same capacity.

 

I use Synthetic Oil only on mine. I was using Mobil-1, but switched to Castol EDGE full synthetic. I don't see a difference in mileage, but I feel more comfortable using synthetic. As for filters, I grab mine from the local Jag dealer for $11. I've also used WIX Oil filters as well. I get those at NAPA, and have always been very pleased with them. Same price. I would avoid FRAM filters in general as the media they use clogs relatively quickly and forces the oil through a bypass rendering the filter useless anyway. Spend the extra $3 and you'll be happy.

 

Can anyone tell me what amount of oil is needed to bring the dipstick reading from the lowest amount to the highest amount? Right now my engine has the bare minimum on the range that is shown on the dipstick. I'm going to pick up a quart of Mobil 1 tmrw after my exam. I just don't want to add too much.

I've been searching all morning (here and Google) and can't find a definitive "Jaguar Published" oil capacity for my '06 3.0 X-Type. I've read 5, 5.5, 6.5, 6.7 6.9...you get the idea.

My *********** has raised the price of an oil change to just over $100, so I'm done with them. So I've found an authorized Castrol place nearby, but being a skeptic, I want to make sure the right amount of oil goes in. I once had a problem with a Saab 9-3 being overfilled which will blow a rear main seal.

So, I know I'm resurecting an old thread, but really need some help on this...what is the true capacity with and without the filter and where does Jaguar post this...its not even in the manual!!

Including the Oil Filter..I have always ended up putting in 6.9 qts.

 

TX Jag, like Colt says, you will end up putting in 7 quarts of oil. If in doubt, put in 6, start the car (so you fill the oil filter), then check the dipstick. You will want to put the oil level atleast in the middle of the dipstick, if not on the higher end (account for any leakage). From there, you can figure out what you truely need.

Just for reference, the amount of oil that the dipstick indicates is somewhat relative. If you vary the length of the dipstick even an 1/8" that can be a 1/2 quart difference in oil amount. So, always use the dipstick to get the proper level. Once you figure out what you car likes, the future oil changes are really easy.

Per the JTIS, it says the capacity is 6.5 quarts. Add a little bit more for a filter and you are right there at 7 quarts.
