Prop Shaft? Whining Noise? Vent Rattle?
First, thanks for this forum. I own a BMW 530i and bimmerfest.com is a great resource. Glad to see there is a great one for Jaguars as well.
I've been doing research on the forums the past few days to try and figure out the problem my wife is having with her 2002 X-Type 3.0 (45,000 miles). To date the JAG has been nearly flawless. The only issues to date are:
1. Rattle in the defroster vents. They replaced them with the new versions and now no problem. Out $140.00
2. Driver's side lock stopped working. They fixed it. Out $80.00.
3. Busted seal on the intake. Out $240.00.
4. Battery died. Out $140.00.
So all in all not too bad. But, not I she has two problems:
1. In cold weather (let's say less than 20 degrees) the car makes a high pitch whine for about 15 minutes or until the thermostat reads directly in the middle. This sounds only shows up when pressing the gas; it does not do it at idle. From the research I've gathered on the web and this forum it sounds like maybe a prop shaft problem. Does that guess seem right? If so, what would I be looking at for costs? If you think it's something else, what could it be?
2. The drivers side dash vent (next to the stearing wheel) rattles when cold. I know it's the vent casing (the black piece that fits into dash), because when I took it out the rattle was gone. Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so, how did you resolve?
Thanks

Re the above, either the tranny of prop shaft probly. Check out some of the posts and you'll find its a fairly common issue.
My X type (02) 2.5 did exactly the same for a full year while I had it.......only when it was cold though and usually only for 5 -10 minutes if that long?
There is a FAQ for flushing and refilling the tranny if you'd like to check it out, in the FAQ section.
I'm guessing you have no warranty for the car?

Thanks for the input so far. So a few things:
1. Problem happens at any speed. It only happens when cold.
2. If it's a transmission flush situation; how much am I looking at?
3. If it's the prop shaft how much am I looking at?
Thanks. Taking to the dealer tomorrow to have it looked at. Should know more then and will report back.

I wonder what the equivalent redline oil is?
I mean for the diff and transfer case oil, the dealer price was 90 dollars a litres.. and redline stuff was only 15 (or 10 if I mail ordered it).
I dont see any redline ATF with a price over 10 dollars a quart.
the price difference makes it worth investigating. official Jag/Ford fluid is called C2S 12120

Ok, got answers...
Per Jaguar, here are my wife's car problems:
1. Engine Oil Pan Gasket Leak: $1134.22
2. Prop Shaft Replacement (the bearing is busted, but the whole thing is replaced as a kit): $1282.82
3. Driver's Side Hub Assembly (no idea what that is): $485.17
I swear I should have bought her a 325xi.
So a few questions..
1. Why is #1 so expensive
2. What the heck is the driver's side hub assembly?

I would want to see the leak myself. How much oil is leakingwhere you park? If less than a drop a day.. you can wait a while.Hopefully Jag Genius or FJT has some input on this.
The hub assembly is the front wheel bearing and has the ABS sensor ring built into it.
It is quite straightforward to replace both the drive shaft and the hub... an idependant shop can probably beat those prices by a lot.
I think that you can find the parts cheaper if you shop around.
whatI dont understand is why they are doing both to fix just one noise.the wheel bearing is easy to diagnose. They should be able to show you the wheel moving when the car is on a lift. I might want to change that first and then do the driveshaft. I have also read that you can get a grease injection syringe needle... (all shops have this) and pump some grease into the driveshaft suppport bearing. There have been some successes reported.
