Default Rather perplexed oil change!

Hello all,

I have recently takin on a lot of working on my wife's Jag 2002 3.0 with at count 147,000 miles.

A while back I did the tune up or what I would call a rebuild of her engine, with the help of the list here and the likes of Thermo especially and others. I made it thru and now she is getting like 20mpg per gal which I am happy with.

Was actually waiting for when I could change the oil again and after like 5,000 miles I took to the garage put her on the lift and... noticed there seem to be a leak under by the plug? No problem right? I bought a new plug from the store and had it with me but!!! low and behold the dag on thing does not fit!

Well car up on lift and no oil in her I did what I thought was the next best thing and used the old plug and put a new Teflon washer on her. Seem to work ok but.. I still have a small leak?

Anyhow took the new plug that does not fit back to supplier and got my money back but a mystery came up? This was the right plug according to their system.
I had them look up the one for a 2.5 engine and that appears to be the one I need?? I am really confused now! THis car came from a dealership after one owner at 17,000 miles and the outside markings say 3.0 engine!

Now to my question gents, is there an easy way to tell if the engine is correct and also should I change the plug now or just wait for the next oil change?

Gee

The oil pan, gasket, fasteners and drain plug are the same for the 2.5 and 3.0 engines. If the auto supply house list 2 different ones there book is wrong. Externally the 2.5 and 3.0 are the same engine. The differences are internal.
The intake and exhaust valves are different. The pistons are different. Surprisingly the cam shafts, connecting rods, wrist pins are the same.

Also, the part number shown here is XR820128

Jaguar X Type |Oil Filter Change | Oil Drain Plug | Oil Change

This says V6 01 - 09

https://www.britishparts.co.uk/produ...-plug-XR820128

This says For all X Type V6 models 01 - 09

JAGUAR X TYPE SUMP PLUG XR820128 | eBay

As to when to change, I would definitely check it often and if it lost a lot then would change the plug now

Soon after getting mine, read a post where an X Type engine had run out of oil and ruined itself without the dashboard showing anything

geewillicurs, keep in mind that people have owned the car before you and countless mechanics have touched the car over the years. It may very well be possible that if the new plug you bought was too small that in the past some damaged the plug/the plug became seized/etc and the plug had to be replaced and instead of replacing the whole oil pan, they simply drilled out the hole, re-tapped it and installed a slightly bigger plug in its place.

You don't mention if the new plug was too small or too big. Hence why I mention the above. Granted, this would also explain why after installing the new washer that you still have a slight leak as the washer may not be able to have sufficient surface to seal against and therefore will have a little bit of weepage.
