I am looking for advice of the most cost effective way to replace my X Type 2004 key. The dealership has quoted 500 dollars for 2 new keys and labor. I would need to tow the car to the dealership as well. The local locksmith hasn't given a definite price, he would have to come look at it for $15 and the cost of a new key would be $90 and up.

Deeandy, if you have a key right now, I would say to look on e-bay and you can get the key fobs for fairly cheap, then you can buy new blanks for the keyfobs and the locksmith can cut the key based off of your old key. If you don't have a key, then you might be in trouble since you will require a special computer to access the ECM to allow programming of the key. Even having 1 key, odds are, you are going to need either the locksmith or the dealership to unlock the computer to allow programming with only a single key.

This was done to make thief's life harder by not being able to program a new key when you dropped off the car to a valet. So, you either need 2 keys or the dealership/higher end lock smith to get new keys for your car.

Hi Deeandy,
Irrespective to who supplies and cuts your new key..... you will still need to visit the dealership... to have the newly cut key - programmed to the vehicle.

NOTE: Every key has a built-in sensor that gets scanned by the car when inserted into ignition. If it has not been programmed to the car, any new key will only open the doors.... but it will not start the car.

The reason your dealer has mentioned two keys is because both the existing key and your new key... need to be included in the programming session.

and when they say you have to have 2 and you dont have any you can either purchase a black stype non remote key, or when they program the first they then put alluminum foil around that key and when asked to program the second. you turn on the ingnition with the first foil covered key while holding any other Jaguar key next to it. Like from the car in the next stall. you car recognises the other key, it changes change that programming of the key to the other car and since the key is not cut for your key it wont start yours either. AND you only had to purchase 1 key
OR, you can just get 2 and you only pay once for programming and youll always have an extra your choice

500 bucks does seem excessive.....
Suggest you look for another dealer who is a little more honest.
Only takes the dealer about 30 mins (tops) to program 2 keys.

Add cost of the 'Blank Key' plus the cost to 'Cut the Blank' (from the existing one) All up, it should not cost you more than $200.

I know of no Locksmiths who have Jaguar programming capabilities... so cannot advise on that aspect or cost.

Unfortunately there are only two Jaguar dealers in my area and they are 50 miles away - add the cost of new key plus towing its just insane. I asked the dealer if I can buy the key online ( it's about 200 for both) but the dealer said sometimes these keys don't work??

 

Hi guys, it's me again writing for happier reasons ... I found my baby's keys yesterday after 3 agonizing weeks.

I recently purchased a 2003 X Type car that came with 1 key, However I wanted to get a replacement key with remote. I went to the dealer Nielo Jauguar In Sacramento and was quoted $480.00 for the KEY, FOB, and Reprogramming.

Breakdown:
Key Cut $25.00
Reprogramming $240
Key Part and Remote $295

After the conversation I said I would think about it. I went online and after inquiring numerous places here is what I did:

I bought a Key and Remote (1 Unit) for $95.00 from Remotes.inc shipping was quick

eBay My World - remotes.inc


I then I called the list of approved Locksmiths and found that

Key Smart in Roseville (locksmith) to have the best prices $99.00 out the door for the Cut and reprogramming

Final Price for peace of mind and a New Set of Key with Remote $295.00 half the price of the dealer.

 

Most def Norri @ Fresno, can the key that was cut by the locksmith start the car?? Cos most will open the car door but can't start it ...

 

Yes the Key that was cut by the locksmith works to open and start the car. I have been using that one. The Remotes.inc from ebay that I ordered the key, sends you a list of approved locksmiths in your area, then you call them and they will give you the prices.

 

I don't know if the US cars are the same as the UK but if you have 2 keys for your X Type that will both start the car then you can program a 3rd yourself. It's the same method as the Ford mondeo MK3 (UK) and I know it works as I have done it myself on the X Type and I now have 3 working keys. If I lose one then I still have 2 and do not have to pay silly money for a spare.
The method is as follows:-

Insert the first already programmed key into the ignition and turn to position II
Turn back to 0 and remove the key
Insert the second already programmed key into the ignition and turn to position II
Turn back to 0 and remove the key
Key programming mode is now activated and you have ten seconds to:
Insert the unprogrammed new key into the ignition and turn to position II
Turn back to 0 and remove the key
Allow 10 seconds to pass for the system to exit programming mode.

I know this does not help if you only have 1 key but if you have 2 then it really is an asset.

 

i've 2004 jaguar x-type the CD player doesn't work & there's CD stuck inside. the radio works fine. i press the CD bottom so many times without success

 

I tried other methods but they would only program the fob/remote and not the key itself.
This method worked first time.
I now have three keys for my 2002 X Type 3.0L AWD

My story is similar but slightly different, but ...

2005 X-Type 3.0L. We have the 2 original keys. The unlock button on the one key doesn't work much any more. (Not the battery, because the other buttons work fine.)

The dealer quoted $185 for a new key, and $145 to program it. I don't think so.

OK, I now know more than I did. My metal key and transponder are fine. I just have a bad button on the fob. So I just need to get a new fob, and then pair it to the car, along with the working fob, or else the other one will no longer work.

 

You can simply buy a new housing (with the buttons and case, but no electronics) and move your key and the remote's electronics to the new fob!

LOTS less expensive, and NO reprogramming.

By the way, the cars can support up to 5 keys and remotes, and you can program them yourself as long as you have two working sets.

Actually, I have an even better ending. Took the fob apart. There is that sheet of bubblewrap-like plastic in there. In the working remote, the sheet is in good shape. For the bad remote, there was a hole in the sheet over the "bad" button. So all I did was to cut off the bad part of the sheet, shift what's left "up" over the 4 buttons, put the fob back together, and it works better. Not as good as the good remote, but better than it did.
