Reversing light and parking aid

Reversing light and parking aid
Hi
Would appreciate any help/ advice regarding x type 2006 2.2 diesel estate with a few problems.
I have ordered a Haynes manual but between now and it being delivered I hope to sort out a few issues with help from forum expertise.
The first is that both the reversing light and the reverse parking aid are not functioning, I'm guessing that they are linked by a switch/relay/fuse? but have not found this problem in a previous post.
Look forward to any suggestions and thanks in advance.

solostax, just for reference, the parking aide is turned on by the reverse lights. So, if you loose your reverse lights, then the parking aide stands no chance of working.
From what I have seen in the past, I am making an assumption that you have a manual tranny. If this is the case, you will need to locate the reverse switch (top of the tranny). You can try unplugging the switch and then sliding a piece of wire into the 2 connections there. The reverse lights should light up at this point (assuming that the car is in the RUN position, the motor can be running or not). If you don't have reverse lights, then I would check fuse F34 in the passenger area fuse box. That may be blown. If the fuse blows again, then you have a wiring problem with the reverse lights (write me and I will assist however I can.
If you have an automatic, then I would first start with checking fuses F2 (passenger area). If that is good, then I would get a multimeter and measure the top of the fuse (there are two very small metal points there, touch the red lead to either one of these posts and the black lead to chassis ground. If you are getting 12 VDC, then you have a wiring problem between the fuse box and the rear wiring harness. If you are not getting 12 VDC, then most likely you have a bad relay R9, which means a new fuse box as the relay is part of a major relay box which is soldered into the fuse box and is not replaceable.
Things that might change what I put here:
-having the sport brake version of the car
-having the trailer tow package
If you have either one of these, let me know and I will give you the updated info.
if you need more help, let me know.

Thermo ,many thanks for getting back to me so quick.
I should have mentioned it is a manual .I bought the Jag last Saturday and have not had much opportunity to explore.
However going on your advice but unable to" locate the reverse switch (top of the tranny)"I jumped to your second step and investigated the fuse box in the glove compartment.
I found the position of these fuses very awkward to get at ,but managed to remove the 10 amp reverse switch fuse (F34). This was not blown but on attempting to replace it I dropped the fuse which I presume has vanished into the wiring loom.
Thinking no problem in finding a replacement I discovered the style of these fuses is not common to other makes so will have to order some spares.
Until then, and delivery of the Haynes manual ,which I hope will show the physical location of the reverse switch, I'll hang fire.
Then I'll resume your advice and report back......Many thanks so far!!!

solostax, check out https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...location-5128/. This will give you some more info on where the switch is located. In short, look down behind the battery box and you would see a "plug" looking piece sticking out the top of the tranny with an electrical plug attached to it. that is what you are after.

Hi Thermo
Replaced fuse and resumed fault finding but have been unable to locate reverse switch.
Followed similar thread on forum but link to a picture from 2008 is not available.
According to posts on this subject It seems that it isn't necessary to remove the battery or anything else to gain access ,but I just cannot locate it.Before I start dismantling everything ,please confirm that its location on a 2006 2.2 manual diesel 6 speed engine has not moved.
The Haynes manual sheds no light on this.
Hope you can help.

solostax, from my research, all the x-types use the same manual tranny. So, it should be where the link says. The best advice that I can tell you is to follow some of the wiring in that area and see if you can find any wiring that goes to the tranny. Since you have the manual, you will only have 1 set of wiring going to the tranny. That will be the wiring for the reverse switch.

Hi Bobzjag
thanks for clarifying the actual location because despite the previous posts indicating it is readily accessible without removing anything I was beginning to get frustrated by not finding it. I guess once you know exactly where it is you can find a way to get to it without too much trouble.
It means a lot to me that you have saved my Sanity.
I'm following another thread regarding the door window trim replacement and surprised there is not more interest in what must be a very common problem.
I'll keep you posted re the switch.
Best regards

Hi Thermo and Bobzjag
Did as you suggested and after removing battery and cage found the rascal hiding directly under the battery cage metalwork. Surprise surprise it wasn't even connected!!, seems whoever replaced the battery last managed to snag the wiring.
All working now and much appreciate your guidance .

Thermo, I bought the Jag last week and although I had a long mental checklist of details to look at viewing ,the reversing lights and parking aid was not one of them.
This is the first Jaguar I've owned and admit I should have researched the model better. Indeed I should have invested time on this forum before looking ,but as I had promised myself a Jaguar when I retired and had been waiting for exactly the right model/colour/fuel/ engine size /interior trim/price range, etc I was beginning to think the car that ticked all those boxes wasn't to be found.
I can only say that this forum has helped me at a most critical time of ownership and given me the confidence to do modest jobs in the future that would be expensive if entrusted to the specialist .
Without the internet ,forums such as this, and the goodwill and experience of its members ,I could not envisage being able to run a Jag without a much bigger financial outlay.
I salute the spirit .....(whether petrol or diesel)! and many thanks..

solostax, I am getting ready to get my "retirement car" I have wanted it for the last 30+ years. So, I can understand the "has to be just so" attitude. The beauty of the X-Type is that it is really a very easy car to work on and for the most part you can do most of the stuff you want if you are even semi handy. Enjoy the car and let the roads cruise on by in the windshield.

Refit part from a Mondeo?
You think it would be possible to remove a used switch from a mondeo and put it in a Jag? Or maybe it's impossible to refit after use?
