Default Symptoms of the Transfer Case Going?

Hello, all!

My 2007 X-Type is in the shop right now having its differential replaced. I took it in because it was making a whining/whistling noise from the rear at certain high speeds.

I will be speaking with the service advisor tomorrow so I wanted to ask about the transfer case. What symptoms, if any, should I be checking for if the transfer case was going?

Thanks!

When my t-case was failing it was the sound that caught my attention. I originally mistook it for a failing wheel bearing. It was a whining noise coming from the front whose pitch and volume changed with road speed but was independent from engine RPM (i.e., noise stayed constant when transmission shifted up or down).

I was very surprised when, after taking it to the dealer and reporting what I thought was a failing wheel bearing, that they identified it as the t-case.

I'd had a wheel bearing on the car fail within the last year so I figured it was time for the other one to go and I thought I recognized the noise that was being made.

As for your failing differential, haven't heard about that one before... =:-0

That's kinda what I thought. I thought it was odd that they'd tell me it was the differential, but that sound was from the rear so who knows. At least it was covered under the Jaguar Select warranty. Now, I just have to keep my ears open in case I hear the whining from the front. Hopefully not, but I guess only time will tell.

Thanks, pab!

so what do i do if i hear the whinning sound at high speed? does that mean that the tc fluid needs changing immediately or it means nothing can be done to safe it. Am asking these questions bcos i think i heard something like that when i drove my cat over 70MPH yesterday.

Default Take to good, non-Jaguar Dealership and...

have them check for the bolts in the Transfer Case becoming loose. I was getting these ominous sounds and it ended up being simply that the bolts were coming undone! They tightened and used some substance to make the bolts stay screwed on.

I hope that's all the problem you have.
