Unhappy X-Type 3.0 Auto not pulling trailler with 2 bikes..:-(

Hello,

I am new to this forum, and new to the world of Jaguars. I've had mine for a few months now, as I recovered it from someone who was going to trash it ! (ok so it has some bodywork to be done).

I've used this formum extensively to fix a few issues, and the amount of knowledge here is impresive!

So i'm using it to do long distance trips (I have a mini for the city) and last week I tried to pull 2 motorcycles on a trailer, around 500Kg of weight. Well, above 60kph the automatic transmission started to cough, almost like a rev limiter (pull - let go - pull - etc in rapid succession). Tried manual, same problem, then downshifted on its own. A bit of smell ensued, and I returned home slowly . This is a recent replacement gearbox (first one died), and I have no info on the donor's history.

Without a trailer it has no apparent issue, and I've tried everything to replicate the problem (like hard acceleration on a steep hill), it shifts smoothly all the time.

Am I screwed or can an ATF flush fix the problem? This is happening right before my vacation, really annoying..

Your experience and input will be very appreciated.

Radu

Ok, not many answers, so I'll do it myself ;-)

I decided to do a flush as described in this forum (replace 3.5 litres , 3 times).

Well, it worked, I tested it by pulling my Mini (1200Kg) on a hill, from 0 to 80Kph. Smooth, not too quick, but no hiccups either.

Used a mix of Total oil with the right code (WSS-M2C922-A1) and the second half was Motul Multi-vehicle ATF 100% synthetic (many similar codes as the Total, but not main JTIS). Total 110 euros.

I'll post un update after my 3000Km trip in August.

Radu, Happy camper!

Good job Radu. Jaguar says the driveline fluids are "lifetime fill," which to me means "until the component fails." Regular fluid service of critical (and expensive!) components has served me well in maintaining the cars I've owned.
