Default Problem with key?

My X-type came with two keys when I got it, one really used and beat up and the other basically new. The owner before me used one of the keys so much, that the new key doesn't work because it doesn't pass the ignition security. Is there any way to reset the security for a short amount of time or make it recognize the key? If not, should I just try shaving off parts of the new key to shape it exactly like the used key? I'll post pictures of the two if necessary.

You'll need to take it to a dealer to have it programed.

You may use the attached document if you have a working key.
Part 1 is for replacing the battery (also in the Owner's handbook) and part 2 is for programming additional keys.

You say
...two keys , one really used and beat up and the other basically new. ...the new key doesn't work because it doesn't pass the ignition security.
But also
... should I just try shaving off parts of the new key to shape it exactly like the used key?
First - Do not attack a perfectly good key.
You seem to be saying that your key is worn. If so replacemnt blades are available.
It is worth obtaining the code for your key if you do not already have it.
It is in the form of T 123342. The code tells a locksmith which cuts to make and how deep.
Search this site or Google Tibbe keys etc to find details.
With the code or a good photo of the good key, some locksmiths will sell you a new blade and also cut it via ebay or similar which may save a trip.
