Default What are these?

Curious about two what appear to be camera lenses in triangular tunnels on the back of the mirror mount/top console looking through the front window.

The car has a forward facing stereo camera. Have a read here: -

That's what it looks like to me but I don't have that feature. Maybe it's installed on all cars but only activated if you pay for it? Can it be retro activated if that's the case?

Do you have AEB? That is what this pair of cameras will do. I was expecting automatic high beam with my Xenon headlights and was told by the dealer that this requires an additional camera that I do not have - the option is not standard in my configuration. Separate cameras drive separate functions when it is safety critical - probably a good thing but undoubtedly would clutter that area of the screen even more.

I have a small camera in each of the triangles on my 2016 XF AWD Prestige with LED headlights. I suppose one works the auto on/off high beam. Don't know about other one. What is AEB?

Actually I don't have AEB .... Autonomous Emergency Braking ..... so if that's what they're for I'll ask again..... can I have it activated? I do have auto dimming LED headlights and maybe one of them is used for that?

Yes, I have read that if the screen is dirty the camera wont activate the auto dimming on LED headlights. I will ask dealer what other camera is for?

AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) and LDW (Lane Departure Warning) are standard in the Swiss market, and make use of those cameras. I just assumed this to be a standard safety feature in all markets.

I have experience in image processing and know that some element of stereopsis (binocular vision) is invaluable in discriminating depth versus speed compared with monocular vision. (Father Ted afficionados, think of Small.... Far Away...)

So the question remains..... if you have the cameras/lenses can you activate the features through software? Do all X260 have this same hardware behind the windshield?

Personally I cannot tell you, but hopefully someone else can. I would be equally interested to know just what can be tweaked through software, and how to do it.

Not all X260 have the same HW stuff behind windscreen, but you could install it and reprogram via SDD

My XF has the cutouts, but nothing inside of them - so they're just placeholders.
