Tying down the trunk

Tying down the trunk
Got to haul some lawn timbers and need to tie the trunk lid down. Anybody have a trick for doing this? Its so nicely closed and covered up in there there's no place to hook a bungee. I'd take the liner off temporarily but how to undo the fasteners. They have a phillips head but turning them doesn't do anything. ??

Those fasteners are called scrivets, the most damnable invention ever. The centre "screw" is supposed to screw out but most of the time it just turns and goes nowhere fast, as you have discovered.
Several things you can try to get them out.
First, grab a trim removal tool (or if you haven't got one a thin flat blade screwdriver) and lever under the outer edge of the scrivet, so there is some tension on the "screw", then see if it will turn out.
If that doesn't work (and it usually doesn't), get hold of a jeweller's flat blade screwdriver, the smaller the better, try to insert it between the head of the screw and the outer part, and try to lever the screw up a bit. If you succeed in getting the screw up about 1 mm then grab a bigger screwdriver, insert it in the gap, and lever the screw out some more. With any luck you will get it out far enough to grab it with your fingernails or some small pliers and yank it right out. Be warned, inserting the screwdrivers and levering often damages the head of the screw a bit. The scrivet will still work but it might look a little ugly, so it pays to have some spares on hand.

Scrivet - those damn trim things where upon disassembly, the center piece always flies somewhere it's not supposed to (and which is also usually inaccessible). Compounding that fact is they are plastic and the magnet on a stick can't help retrieve it like with a screw.
Although they confound me a lot less than they used to when they first appeared.

I just had a little play around with the scrivets holding my boot liner in place, and all except two unscrewed no problem. For the two that didn't I inserted my trusty dirt cheap "car door panel remover" tool under the base of the scrivet, and both times the screw now turned out.
