I'm never one to lecture on forums but please tell us its not because you want to drive without belts on.

AND....Where did you find that info?? Maybe there are other things that can be changed.

What is ACC mode?

Cars are full of these sorts of tricks. I was once quoted 400 GBP for a dealer to recover my car and give it a new throttle body, which had apparently failed. Someone on a forum gave me a sequence of actions (door open, ignition in position X, press pedal 8 times or whatever) and it reset the throttle body. 400 quid saved!

These chimes drive me mad too - I never drive away without my belt on - to me it is like leaving the house with no trousers - it just doesnt happen because it would feel so odd. Safety is a behaviour, I don't need to be yelled at by my car.

Accessory mode; the position between off and start on the ignition.

Frankly, I like the chimes because they force my passenger to put on the belt even if they don't want to. Also, if you always belt up before driving, the chimes never sound so why disable them?

The chimes are annoying. Every intelligent person wears a seat belt while driving. Try having a sleeping kid in the back seat and then park the car. If you don't turn off the car before taking your belts off the car will chime and wake the kid up. Or try sitting in a parking lot while waiting for someone with the car on. You aren't moving your sitting there waiting and want the air on so you don't sweat to death. No need for a belt in that case. They could have set it up so the chime only happens when the car is in reverse or drive. I'd be perfectly happy with that.

In mine the chime doesn't become active until the car exceeds 5 mph, about the same time the doors automaticaly lock. When stopped, the chime will sound unless the car is in park.

Definitely not the case in mine. That's bizarre.

I have a very early 2009. Might have been a production change in later 2009 models.

The chimes are just for us North Americans. At one point this was legislated in preference to actual belt use legislation. The key in the ignition chime was also invented for North America. Only in North America were slam lock door locks used which leads to keys locked in the car quite frequently.

Now we have keyless start and keyless entry we don't get the chime for "keys" in the ignition.

Also, the chime doesn't sound if you select reverse....

Althrough there are chimes if you open and shut the door and the keys are still in the car (well at least on my car it does).

What's holding you back?

Seriously, you must wear a seat belt whenever the car is moving forwards. Airbags do not retain you inside the vehicle, especially in a rollover. Airbags are also useless in the secondary collision with say the bridge abutment after the other dufous hits your car.

In fact, you are not really driving unless your belt is on, you are just along for the ride.

It is an easy habit to develop and once learned is no inconvenience at all.

Those chimes were intended for you.

This technique of plugging and unplugging the seatbelt had no effect in my XF, chimes still sound.

OP said 8x, but I recall another thread saying it required 11 (or maybe 13?)

In any event, I did it over a year ago and it's stayed off since. I don't drive without it, but for reasons already said, I found it very annoying... example, pull into my driveway, put the car in Park but leave running, open door to get out for the mail... ding ding ding ding ding... the silence now is wonderful

I learned to drive just before the seat belt law was passed. My father said that as it was becoming law I might as well start the right way and belt up every trip. Nowadays, I won't even drive round from the back to the front of my house without it... you never know!

Open door ding ding not the same as seatbelt ding ding.

You should know that it is possible that someone might steal your car when you are away for "just a moment". In case you think this ridiculous I know someone who lost his Mercedes this way while removing golf clubs from the trunk!

One should always switch the engine off before exiting the car, there is no reason not to on a modern car. In Europe, the latest green technology even switches off the engine when the car stops, though that would be insufficient if you actually exit the car.

Begs an interesting question though, how far away does the key have to be to prevent a would be car jacker simply re-starting the car and driving off?

this worked for me! Glad to get rid of that chime.

Just one question - how do you turn back on?

The key has to be very close to a door to open. If it's more than a about two feet away it won't work for me.
