97 XJ6L stalling on idle???
Doh, just bought a 1997 XJ6L which was in beautiful cosmetic condition (despite 110,000 miles). Drove it back from SC to Washington DC and handled great. The next day it stalled twice in traffic. I was hoping this was a fluke. Started the next morning, and about every other time I come to a stop in traffic the rpm's shut down and the car stalls. It starts right back up if I put it in drive, but then when I go to the next light it dies again. The battery light generally comes on as it dies and occassionally the transmission light even comes on. They generally go off when it restarts, so don't know if that's justa fuse. So basically any time I don't have my foot on the gas and am at a low speed it seems to die. Not sure if this could be a fuel pump or alternator. The electronics on the car still work when it dies.
Help! I'm hoping I didn't buy a lemon.

Nope, not lemon hopefully
Well, basically it should be something related to the idle sensor .Do you have any fluctations to the RPM ? I had some fluctations on my XJ40 and occasionally stalled . I had it serviced by Jag Specialist and the problem turned out to be a dirty idle sensor or some throttle body part . They cleaned it all and put it back .And voila

No alt lights just come one, just the battery and sometimes the transmission light (which really throws me for a loop). All the electronics works, even when it shuts off. So hopefully not the alt as that'll be $600 or more to replace I'm sure. Lead culprits, so far, throttle body build up, idle sensor, MAF sensor, ECM or BCM.

$600 ????? WTF? No way man. I can get it remanufactured for like 50 bucks, plus shipping. The downside is the downtime which is basically shipping. BTW, my response is posted in the other forum. Find out what the price of the alternator is and let us know, because $600 sounds rediculous.

My estimate was probably off, I know I have spent $300 or so on previous cars like my 300ZX and was just trying to adjust for Jaguar. Like I said, I'm guessing it's not the alternator anyways. But we'll see when I take it to the shop. I live in Washington DC anyone know of a decent garage around here. I have a decent mechanic but don't know if he knows much about jags, and I definitely don't want to go to the dealer.

Battery light: ok. Take and have the battery load tested. If the battery is having problems it will shut the car down. The alternator may be doing fine, but if the battery is weak the computer will freak out. The computers require a constant voltage stream and the alternator is too irregular to power them. A bad battery maybe the only problem. I hope it's that cheap and easy!

Had a stalling-at-idle problem with my 1996 XJ6 at about 85,000 miles. A new EGR valve (new-in-box, $30, ebay) fixed it. If I hadn't found a new one so inexpensively I probably would have tried taking the old one off and cleaning it before giving the Jag dealer big bucks for one of his new ones.
