Any advice on front crankshaft seal replacement?

Question Any advice on front crankshaft seal replacement?

I have a 97 XJ6 that is leaking oil in the front. Appears to be the front crankshaft seal. Are there any tricks to this or is it pretty straigh forward? I'm worried about getting that pulley off. Do I need any special tools? Any advice is appreciated.

pretty strait forward, you will need a puller with a long bolt as it has to go deep int the crank. Once that is done slide the steel spacer out Then carefully remove the seal (the case isnt to strong and can crack if your not careful just pull on the seal). Instalation also carefully tap in and leave the inatalling sleve in the seal. Good luck

Yep, pretty straight forward.

Remove the fans

Remove the belts,

"Bump" the starter with the long socket bar resting on the ground to loosen that crankshaft nut, I removed the plug from the injection "pulse generator" just so it did not start, BUT a bump is all that is required.

My pulley just slid off, sweet, but a puller may be required. DO NOT lever on that alloy cover, it WILL crack.

Remove the seal runner ring, a new ring MUST be installed, it WILL leak again if you dont.

CAREFULLY remove the old seal, again by NOT levering too much on that cover, common sense really.

Tap in the new seal, but DO NOT tap it too far, coz there is no lip to stop it going all the way inside, then you will be HAPPY, ha. Just tap it till it is flush with the outside of the cover.

Remove the plastic seal protector, slide in the seal runner ring, refit the pulley, then the bolt, tighten as spec (bloody tight). I reached down the LH side of the engine and removed the rubber plug in the trans cover and used a long 15mm socket on a 10" bar to lock the engine using one of the torque convertor bolt heads, then a 3ft tube on my breaker bar, pulled like hell, done sweet.

Refit the belts, fans, enjoy the drive.
