Default Rear Diff Question?

I recently did my right rear wheel bearing. Today I was double checking it as I was hearing a slight sqweek coming from the back of the car. The wheel was fine but as I was trying to duplicate the noise, I raised the rear of the car on jackstands and placed the car in drive. I only noticed the left wheel turning. It was also like this in reverse. Is this normal or is there a problem with the differential. The vehicle is a 1995 Vanden Plas without traction control.

Depends if it has the limited slip differential as there is some kind of identification stamp on it that I can't remember but someone else might

If it has no limited slip differential then this behavior is to be expected.

MOST X300s, aside from the XJR, do not have limited slip differentials. There is a "secretly coded" label on the right side of the rear differential cover. Red and yellow stripes mean standard, non-limited slip. Red and yellow stripes with a black X through them means limited-slip. The action of the rear wheels when off the ground is a tell-tale as well.

The XJR came standard with the LSD, and the XJ12 did not (at least in the USA).

The brochures state that the LSD was not available as an option, but some were put in down the road, here and there...

Agreed with above,

The squeak you seek is probably the halfshaft u/joints crying out for grease.

Loooong forgotten item on the later Jags, is the 4 grease nipples on these shafts.

A couple of squirts a year is all it takes.

Both wheels should spin in Drive on jack stands. If they dont and you cant spin it yourself then I guess parking brake on this wheel is set incorrectly or pads came off the backing plate, there are adjusters on each wheel. Very tricky to get them both right.
