Welcome to the forum stuart10,
I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X300 forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.
Please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums!
I do know that a hole saw of sufficient diameter to accomodate your entire hand will definitely work, and as long as the hole is within reach of the components you want to access, the position isn't at all critical.
Sorry, I couldn't resist. We're normally very friendly around here, but I guess the tone of your very first post brought out the sarcastic jerk in me!
I'm sure some of our members will be happy to offer suggestions when you're ready to receive them in the helpful spirit in which they are intended. In the meantime, you might try the Search function at the top of this page to see if this issue has been discussed and resolved before.
Cheers,
Don

Don is correct and has bravely offered the suggestion that I had in mind. The holes you seek to drill already exist. As long as Don has broken the ice on suggestions as-it-were, I'll offer another: When you search, try "trunk" if you don't find what you seek with "boot" because I KNOW the info you seek is here in the X300 forum in more than one thread, but I don't recall whether in "English" or "Metric" terminology. BTW, you will also find a thread where a member did it as Don jokingly described, above.... but you need not employ such drastic measures.
