Default Radio issues!

Hello all!
Speakers in my 95 VDP sound good, EXCEPT when any kind of bass plays through them they crackle and crunch. I do not have the premium system and i have an original head unit that im reluctant to replace because i cant find aftermarket units that blend in well with the design of the car. Are subtle touchscreen units even a possibility? Because right now it seems that i'll be having to replace the whole lot.

Default Bass problem

your speakers are old enough to need replacement. they get stiff and "bottom out" with age.

Replace the speakers. If your head unit powers up and the buttons all work, you are way ahead of the game....

Crackling during base is just the first phase of failure. I'd wager if you pull a door panel, you'll find the offending speaker has already begun to rip or disintegrate.

Default Aftermarket radio w/fascia

This is what it could look like (if you did like me and went for a cheap radio) and I can see an aftermarket radio with a flip up screen working, That's probably the way I'll go if I can't get either of my Alpines working (anybody try swapping boards between units?).

Yes, I have had some success with swapping boards and tape player from junkyard units
