Claudialynn,
I just pulled my trans and filled with the pentosin fluid. From all of my research, it was the fluid of my choice. I only have a little over 500 miles on it so far, and it has been running great. I put a new "a" drum and a remaned valve body section for the pressure regulator. I drained the entire trans and pumped out the torque converter. The fluid in the torque converter was really dark, not the honey/straw color it should be. Trans has been shifting great and no problems as of yet. I plan on doing a trans fluid change every 50 to 60K based on my findings in the torque converter fluid. Just to add to the options, ZF has their own fluid, Lifeguard 5. I have found it for $95 for 6 litres.

You can still purchase the OE Mercedes fluid for the supercharged cars from Autohaus for around $16.00 or the Fuchs is about $12.00 and the Febi is around $13.00 -- who knows who actually makes it ........... Autohaus list the Febi for the Jag and the Fuchs for the MB ?

Default fluid standard is what counts

As long as its the same standard (LT7411? LT1174 - I forget what the bottle says) then it sounds subjective. I've been using the Mobil 1 synthetic fluid for over 10k miles since swapping the filter and topping up the fluid. I did not do a flush, but wound up adding 5-ish quarts of fluid. So far, so good; shifts fine under all temperatures and speeds and never slips. Remember too, Esso = Exxon = Mobil (same company, same product). You can pay $70+ per quart for the Jaguar synthetic but id say there's little appreciable difference.

I am going to change the trans fluid and filter on a 1999 XK8. The car has not been touched and has 113,000 miles. The only fill plug I can find is on the left side, in front of the pan and is angled down. In the vid. on the forum the plug is horizonal and a little farther back. Is this the right plug?

Fill plug is on the side and you'll have to use one of those hand pumps to put new fluid into the transmission. I'd have to get under the car to remember exactly where the plug is, but that sounds right.

When filling, make sure the transmission is at the right temperature (not too hot, not stone cold) or the level will not be right.

I have herd alot about the trans fuid to use. They range in price from 50$ to 7$.
I'v listed esso LT71141 (OEM), Mercon V ATP AT 216, and Pentosin ATF1 so far and ther are more. Jag has a service bulliton to change the factory fuid, but to what? They only give a Jag part number. This meens the factory fuid can be improved on. My thrans at 113000 miles mones at low speed (15,20 MPH) I would like to change out the fluid with a better fluid not one that just cost a lot.

I've had no problems with the Mobil1 synthetic fluid for almost 20k miles now. I got it at Advance Auto, I think and it didn't cost anywhere near the Jaguar price for their synthetic fluid. Remember when you 'change' the fluid, you will still have a few quarts of the old fluid in the torque converter that you won't be able to get out unless you do two complete changes (not worth it).

And if some transmission shop recommends a transmission flush don't do it - most of them say it's a bad idea. Just live with the remainder of the old fluid blending with the majority of new fluid - it won't harm anything.

Default Transmission

COULD YOU HELP ME PLEASE? I HAVE A 1996 JAGUAR VDPLAS, AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON, AND THE TRANSMISSION LIGHT IS ON, AS WELL. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO A TRANSMISSION SHOP, WHO TOLD ME THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE CHANGED....3K DOLLARS. I DID NOT BELIEVE THAT. CAME HOME, ANALYZIED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID, PERFECTLY CLEAR, NO BURNT ODOR, AND THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING SMOOTHLY. COULD I NEED A TRANSMISSION FLUID FLUSH? HOW DO YOU KNOW IF THE TRANSMISSION FLUIDS ARE LOW? COULD THIS BE A FUSE PROBLEM? THERE IS NO LEAK IN THE TRANSMISSION ITSELF. THE VEHICLE HAS 130k MILES AND HAS NEVER HAD THE TRANSMISSION FLUIDS CHANGED ,THAT I REMEMBER. cOULD ANYONE DIRECT ME AS TO WHERE TO START ,TO AVOID A PURCHASING A NEW TRANSMISSION . PLEASE EMAIL ME AT DESMONDWIDDUP@HOTMAIL.COM OR CALL 407 399 1240 I YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS. I THANK YOU.

Welcome to the forum. Do you have a 6 or 8 cyl engine? The 1996 should have a straight 6, in which case you should post on the X300 forum. It also has a transmission dipstick so you can check the level.

Desmond:
I add my welcome to the forum and I bet one of the moderators will move you to the X-300 forum. In the mean time...

What symptoms does the car have besides the lights? You have told us is the dash lights are on, then you ask us to dispute what the shop told you, with without telling us how the car is behaving.
