So, I have a buddy that's a locksmith, but he doesn't have the adapter to cut TIBBE keys...bummer I thought...well I guess not


With a set of precision files I cut 2 keys to my original key in about an hour of spare time. So, now I have 2 spare keys that open the car and turn the ignition but will not start the car.


My buddy says that he will program them to the car for me, but I read somewhere that it's possible to program them without some kind of a computer. Anyone have an idea what the procedure is? I'm not asking about the Remote/Fob programing but the actual immobilizer/transponder key coding.

 

As previously mentioned, you need two programmed keys to be able to add more keys without using the dealer computer. And you have to programme them as a set.

Your buddy's method may be different, but the typical cloning procedure used by locksmiths is different from dealer programming. It essentially creates multiple electronic copies of the one working key. The SLM only thinks there is one key because all of them have the same electronic signature.

Oh? I thought all keys had to be programmed by a dealer. Do you have a thread reference for DIY if you already have two? Thx.

 

Apparently, if you have two keys, it will let you do it in almost the same way as doing the fobs. It's turn this, click that, insert key blah, blah.

This does not work on later cars.

I suggested previously that a good strategy is to do it in the dealer parking lot. If it works, you drive away. If it doesn't, go in and see the nice service advisor.

As far as I know, the only cars that you can have '2 keys and add a third' is the X200 (early S-Type).

We discovered this when my buddy at the dealer had a Ford Pick-up and it was documented to work for his vehicle. We had an S-Type in for 'adding a key' so he thought he would try the 'turn each master key on and off and insert the third'.

It worked because the car is very similar to the Lincoln LS.

I don't think I ever tried on another Jaguar but I don't think it will work.

Here are the keys. The first one is a used up key I got in the mail when I ordered a remote so I experimented on it first. I also cut out the transponder (on green tape) so you guys can see how it looks.

 

But where did you get the key blanks and how much?

Today my buddy came over and programmed all the keys to the car so I have 3 keys now. He also told me he bough the adapter for cutting TIBBE keys so I guess I wasted my time doing it by hand....oh well...

We also checked in all his manuals and apparently there is no way to add a key to the x308 without a programming tool. He also mentioned that you need at least 2 keys just to program any key to the car. So, if you only have one key and you loose it, you will need to get two keys just to make it work.

Hopefully now I can install a remote starter in the next few days

Just out of curiosity, what is the "programming tool" for keys like? Is it some software to run on a laptop, or is it a small plug in box or ?????

 

The X200 (early S-Type) needed 2 keys MINIMUM to program keys. You could not choose 1 key when the 'configure keys quantity' message was on the screen. The MAX quantity is 5. Other models you could choose 1 key minimum and 5 keys maximum. The X308 can be configured to accept 1 key with the WDS or IDS.

The X200 can be 'fooled' into thinking there are 2 keys by wrapping the only correct key in foil and get another (customers) key held close to the wrapped key during programming. When the second key is requested, you quickly unwrap the correct key and program.

I don't know about other programmers minimum requirement.

Hey I have a '98 x308 that is missing all keys, but today the car is being trailered to Patrick Jag of Naperville to have the 2 keys programmed. If possible, for future referance, how can I get in touch with this man who can program keys.
