Unhappy Intermittant fault at start up

I have a 2001 XJ 4.0 V8. I has an intermittent start up issue, which is strange and annoying

The dash board information panel reads in sequence

1. Trax on available
2. ASC not available
3. Gearbox failure
4. Engine in failsafe mode

The ignition key cannot turn and the gear lever is locked into park and the car will not start! It eventually will start, perhaps over an hour later.
I have had the ABS booster pump replaced, have had all of the ABS sensors tested, their earths and wiring checked, the gear lever micro switch is perfect and I have replaced the battery. Nothing is showing up on the diagnostics. My local Jaguar dealer is as baffled as I am.
What can it be?

I would start cleaning and checking power points and ground (earth) points. Don't trust the crimps on the ground straps either. Many posts in the archives on these little buggers.

It sounds like you've had similar problems. Which ground points did you find the most troublesome?

I had a problem with the main ground strap at the battery. Called the wife to come and give me a jump, and when I just fiddled with the ground strap the car started. It was also very hot. Turns out the connection at the crimp was not good (although the ends were fine). I think I added solder at first, but eventually replaced it.

Jim

Thanks! I'll check it out this Saturday. It's annoying but otherwise my Jag is running great.

Many thanks! Page 22 details my symptoms exactly. I'll get on to it and check out the Inertia switch.
