Talking Trunk Lights

There is a bundle of wires going through the right trunk (boot) hinge. Often some of the wires break from flexing. I had this problem. It can lead to security problems too. There are many posts on the subject, but basically you have to take the plastic cover off and the tape and look for broken wires. Try a search, you'll find a lot of posts. I had this problem and couldn't get the car out of valet mode until the wires were fixed.

There is a small black rectangular switch within the lock mechanism which takes care of the lights. Mine stuck. cleaning and a little lubrication helped.

Exact same issues.
In my car, I traced it back to the contact in the micro-switch, not the cables.
The contacts inside the switch are not always contacting.
By wiggling the switch pin (you will need to take the lock partly out to check) the lights come on an off.
I read you can buy a replacement switch but I did not come to that yet.

My 03 developed that problem along with intermittent license plate lights. As JimmyL mentioned, there is a wiring loom that runs up the trunk hinge and the wires are known to break. I removed the wiring cover from the passenger side hinge and exposed the wiring... I then gently flexed the wiring and the lighting began to flicker. I fixed the problem by removing a section of the broken wiring and soldering in a new section.

Azcat, Since you mention, intermittent license plates, ... I also have a rear Right License Plate light not working? This was going on when my right brake light wasn't working, the dealer's mechanic fixed the right brake light but didn't repair the license plate bulb. The bulb is good in the holder and even tried other bulbs and it will not work.

As mentioned before, the 2 problems can exist next to each other (as it was on my car).

The trunk light can be a break in the cable at the hinge area, or can be the switch. In my case it ended up to be the switch itself (light came on delayed).

The license plate lights is normally a break in the cable. I had one light out, and replaced a part of the cable at the hinge area. Each license plate light has its own cable by the way.

A bit of measuring should give you quickly a clue where to find what problem.

Look at the posts in an early thread about the trunk light issues:
