Default XJ8 Remote Programming

Hi guys. I have a 99 XJ8 with no remotes. I seen some on ebay which are advertised for my car for about $50 a piece. I called the dealership to ask for a part number so I can match them up, instead of giving me a part number I was told that I can't program them myself and have to bring the car in to them. They said it'll be $192 to purchase each remote and $140 to program each one. I explained that I have bought them myslef for other vehicles and programmed them myself, but they insist that I cannot do it. This is contrary to everything that I've read online so far, including ebay. Any input?

Not true!

Ask another dealer to provide the part number from the VIN. Shop for the remote. Programming instructions are available here:

Just to follow up, I ordered two remotes from ebay, got them both today & programmed with no problem. Just as easy as programming went on my Chevy & Dodge. I had the seller put his instructions in the package with the remote and they were the exact instructions I found on here.

1. hold back high beams
2. Insert key and put in #1 position
3. flash high beams 4 times
4. Push button on one remote and then corresponding button on other remotes until done.

Its that easy. And I didn't even call another dealer, you can look up the part number online, look at the picture, make sure the seller is advertising the right one, and match it up with yours. Thanks again guys.

Default you can get cheaper remotes if you research

I suggest you do more research on ebay. Get the part number from the dealer by giving them your vin #. Then go on ebay and enter that part number on the search box. I was able to get a remote in excellent condition for $10. including shipping. Program it yourself as described above, it's really easy.

I just did this via the dealer. I bought the remote for my 2003 XJ8 on eBay for $30.
I paid the dealer $55 to program the remote. If you buy the remote from the dealer it's about $200!!

And God forbid you only need a key. That's $144.
Hilarious.

Anyway, I ordered a 2nd remote on eBay, and THIS TIME, I plan to try to program per the directions above.

Oh and btw, my dealer in Edison, NJ would NOT hand out part numbers.

Said it's against policy to provide that to 'customers'.

Tell a manager it is against your personal policy to do business with them.

FYI for anyone with a 98 VDP who wants to program extra remotes. I followed the posted instructions; however, I had to have the drivers door and trunk open.

Hi!

I, too, need a remote. I see many on Ebay.

But RE: your quote above, what happens if you don't already have a remote?

Thank you!

if you only have one, deliberate slowish pushing on a button I think 5 times. It'll then be programmed to the car. It'll let you know with the gear selector led flashing or a chirp.

Thanks.

Has anyone else successfully programmed a remote when that's the only remote you had?

Do a search on remotes in the forum. Might be under XK8. Anyway, the programming process is set up for up to 5 remotes. If you only have one, you are programming it to the car 5 times, which is why Sean B said to push the button 5 times. If you had 5 remotes, you'd push the button on each, once. If you had two remotes, you'd push the button on one of them three times, and on the other twice, for a total of five button pushes.

Default 2000 xj8l

I purchased the remotes for $10 and programmed it according to the instructions and it works like a magic. I've had my XJ8L for over 8 years and was told it would cost me hundreds to program and that only the dealer can program it. Glad I found a way around it. Cheers!!!

Looking to upgrade/modify. any suggestions would be wonderful. Recently installed a stubby antenna and will install 6K or 8K HID. Cant seem to get my headlights to be bright.

If anyone knows of any Jaguar Junk/Salvage yards in TX (DFW) please let me know.

Hi I was checking out your postings. Man this site is great.
I have the same situation. I bought the car with no control.
I lent the car to a friend and she couldn't get in the car. She must have turned it really hard cause it has a lot of play and now i'm scared to lock the doors.
I bought a control on ebay but not by part number. I bought it by model and yr of the car. which is 98 xj8 . i went to the instructions you ask to use but it seems to be for xk series. do you have the instuctions for mine 98 xj 4.0 ?

Can you supply programing instructions for (98) XJ8?
Please...

My brother's remote does nothing for the car. Is there a way to test the remote or should I just try to program it?

Try reprogramming first and foremost. If it doesn't reprogram, time to dig into the remote. Considering you only have one remote, it makes it hard to trouble shoot. If your brother had two remotes it might be a little easier to trouble shoot. Good luck.

Well, I tried to re-program the remote and it worked a couple of times. The trunk button seems to work all of the time, but the door buttons only work a time or two after I do the programming. :?
