Default Caviar - what does it look like in real life?

Has anybody here seen a caviar XJ? Can you describe the color to me? The pictures I have seen on line range from burgundy to dark brown? I'm also interested in the contrast between the bodycolor and the black pillar on the sides of rear windshield

thanks

As you'ved described it, "ranging from burgundy to dark brown", is fairly accurate. Caviar is one of the "Xirallic" paint choices (extra sparkly, multi-hued metallic flake paint). Caviar looks brilliant in bright sunlight, refracting flashes of maroon and burgundy hues, but can appear a little dull and mousy under overcast skies. Unlike Indigo (another Xirallic paint), which registers as nearly black under less-than-sunny conditions, Caviar just looks brown. With Caviar, the black C pillar never quite disappears under any lighting condition(if the pillar bothers you).

It's a beautiful color IMHO - check out YouTube if you're interested in seeing Caviar under various lighting and weather conditions (too many examples).

My dealer described it as a very deep purple. In the showroom it looked like a black brown and the pillars were not very noticeable. It was the color I originally wanted until I tried to get one in my area.

Thanks guys. Anybody else - particularly as to the "dull," "mousy" "just looks brown" appearance. I don't want a brown car but think a burgundy or deep purple would look cool

Imagine fine mahogany furniture with burgundy undertones, very classy

"Dull and mousy" sounds a bit harsh, sorry, I didn't want to leave you with that impression, but chocolate brown tending towards aubergine is definitely the color you get under less-than-sunny conditions; certainly not burgundy or deep purple. Something about the "Xirallic" paint makes it look non-metallic under low-light conditions unlike standard metallic paint which appears metallic under most lighting situations - go figure

Caviar was one of my top color choices - my first test drive was in a Caviar XJ, unfortunately under inclement conditions. Yeah, it appeared brown, but not in an off-putting way, and I'm certain I would've been happy with that choice had I bought Caviar.

Watch the CNET review of a Caviar XJ SS performed under inclement conditions, and shows a fair representation of Caviar (at least on my monitor). 2011 Jaguar XJ Supersport - YouTube

I agree with the comment about this Jaguar metallic paint. My Ultimate Black, unlike other metallic painted cars I have owned, does not look metallic at all unless it's out in the sun and then it really sparkles. That being said, I would make sure you like the color either way.
