Default Kudos: Fuel Economy

So I just got back this morning from a 3-day trip to Chicago. I have to say, I am still extremely impressed with the fuel economy my Supercharged XJL gets! All highway driving to Chicago, but plenty of congested downtown city driving when I was there. Total numbers? 578 miles round trip, 24.7MPG. That just blows my mind that a long-wheelbase, 470HP, supercharged V8 engined car can put up those kinds of numbers. And before factoring in the city portion, my MPG's were much better!

I know most people come to forum to troubleshoot some sort of problem, so I figured I'd mix it up and throw Jaguar some kudos on this one for designing such a great powertrain!

Yes, if you drive like you have a little sense, these cars do turn in excellent MPG stats.

On long highway trips over the summer I was seeing MPG's of 28-29 in my regular V8 5.0. I was very impressed.

a6kmita,

I noted from your public profile that your XJ is a 2011. You'd be even more impressed with the improvement in fuel economy beginning with the 2013 model year, which introduced the 8-speed transmission and Intelligent Stop-Start.

But to get the highest mpg with the 5.0L SC engine, you have to drive with an imaginary raw egg in between the sole of your right shoe and the exhilarator pedal!

My XJL is a 2011 also. There is no doubt in my mind that replacing the six-speed transmission with an eight-speed would make a difference. My 2013 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn is equipped with a 5.7 Liter Hemi and an eight-speed transmission. For what it is, it achieves excellent gas mileage.

Somehow or another (and I haven't driven one so maybe I'm wrong) I think the Intelligent Stop/Start would be distracting; at least to me. It may produce a significant fuel savings for people who drive mainly in the city, but I live in a rural area and I believe the nuisance factor may well outweigh any benefit for me.

I am in complete agreement about that imaginary raw egg. It also helps save your tire tread!
