I was at my dealer last week for routine service and saw the new style red Growler grille badge with the fluted background in their Parts Dept. showcase. I thought it would look great on my XJ since I already have the red Growler wheel center caps. Unfortunately, it is not an easy installation because you have to access the rear of the grille to unbolt the old badge and install the new one. My dealer quoted me just under $200, mostly for labor. I concluded that it wasn't worth the cost and decided to try my hand at painting the black background red - very carefully.
I was pleased with the results, particularly since it cost only $1.79 for the Testor's enamel (and I have over half the bottle left). Pretty big bang for the buck. The red background really stands out much more than the black. And the solid background matches the wheel center caps better than the fluted background.
If I didn't tell you that I painted the background red, you wouldn't know unless you examined it closely. The enamel is glossy and it dried smooth without any brushstrokes. And it's still the OEM emblem.

How can you determine if the original black background emblem is bolted to the grille if you can't see behind it? If it is bolted to the grille, is there an easy way to remove it?

Seems pretty pricey if they didn't have to remove your grille, which is what I presume for a self-adhesive emblem that is not bolted to the inside of the grille. How much time did they charge? Or did they have to remove your grille?
Which Hennessey Jaguar location did your work, Gwinnett, North Point, or Buckhead? North Point quoted me almost $200, which included a bolt-on badge and removing my grille to install it.

Stuart, I use Hennessey at North Point with Pete Alvarez as my service advisor and Keith as my technician. I looked through my records and I wasn't charged for the installation as it was done when I had to have the left headlight assembly replaced due to a stone cracking the assembly and was paid for under insurance so only the part was paid for and it was about $70.00, so the front bumper was partially off. But they normally charge 1 hour ($123.00/hr) for the badge replacement. Lastly, Stuart, if you tell them in parts and service you are Jaguar Forum member the parts are discounted from their normal pricing. My badge had no screws or bolts as you can see by the back of the old black medallion in the photo.
