Default "Right Front (Tire Pressure) Low" Warning

Happy Labor Day (U.S.) or Labour Day (Canada).

Yesterday I got an instrument display warning on my 2011 XJL which states: "Check All Tire Pressures, Right Front Low" including a pictorial representation of the car showing the right front tire in red.

I stopped at a tire center and had all four tires brought up to the recommended 32 PSI inflation pressure. The technician said the right front tire was low about 4 PSI. before he brought it up to the recommended pressure.

Problem is, the same warning light still comes on, and looking at the right front tire it doesn't appear to be low, nor does the car pull to the right at all.

Any suggestions?

The tire was probably very hot at the time the pressure was checked due to it being driven while significantly under inflated. Adding air at that time might not have been sufficient to achieve the 32 psi (cold) the car requires. Check the pressure before you drive the car any distance.

Radial tires won't appear low or cause the car to pull until they're almost flat.

If you don't already have a good digital tire pressure gauge, buy one. I don't rely on my TPMS and check all 4 tires monthly with my digital gauge.

If I had a TPMS warning, I'd be concerned about the cause. Simply adding more air isn't enough if the tire continues to lose pressure. Possible causes include a nail or other foreign object penetrating the tread or sidewall, a leaking tire valve, a cracked rim, or a bad TPMS sensor. For a quick check, fill a spray bottle with soapy water, remove the valve cap, saturate the tire and look for bubbles.

Shortly after I bought my XJ I had a nagging slow leak and did all of the above but couldn't find the leak. I took my car to a tire shop and they showed me where that wheel was welded on the inside bead and was leaking very slowly from that spot. Fortunately, my CPO dealer gave me a new wheel under warranty.

Thanks guys for excellent suggestions.

Turns out the extreme inner edges of both of my front tires were heavily worn after only ~10,000 miles, the right front "low pressure" tire worn down to the cord, even though the balance of the front tires have a least 3/32" remaining.

Apparently numerous "multi-point" inspections performed by my local Jaguar dealer didn't detect this highly abnormal tire wear.

They then quoted me $672.51 to replace the two front tires (Continental Extreme Contact DWS 245/45 ZR19).

I'm seeking to get the new Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 tires installed by a local tire dealer for ~$130.00 less, and the have then have the four wheel alignment done by my local Jaguar dealer for ~$120.00 (due to the rear air suspension which might have to be compensated for).

As a side note, my "smart key" fob started to be be not recognized by my car, and my dealer quoted a replacement unit for $467.50.

I told them I would instead start using my wife's "smart key" fob.

P.S., I had to tell them how to turn off the "low tire pressure" warning: "over-inflate" the tire. Hasn't come on since.

Sorry to hear that, John, that sucks! Did the dealership tell you why the tires had work unevenly so quickly? Was the alignment off, or something else?

Also, does you dealership perform Road Force balancing and alignment? You may want to ask them about it.

Lastly, what is the difference between the Conti DWS 06 tires vs. what you have on now?

The Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 versus the previous DSW difference is the new tire has a two ply sidewall which improved impact resistance by 35%; plus the tire promises improved response and precision, wet and snow performance and tread life, which now carries a 50,000 mile warranty. They look virtually the same.

The 245/45-19 front wheel size for my base XJL just became available and I got two for $567.82 including environmental and disposal fees, installation and lifetime spin balancing, shipping, new TPMS valves, and taxes, compared to my local Jaguar dealer's quote of $672.51, so I saved $104.69. They should arrive in a few days.

Received and had them installed yesterday. Paid an extra $67.50 for lifetime road hazard coverage on the two of them. Getting all four wheels aligned tomorrow to hopefully correct excessive wear on the inside front tire edges.

The Discount Tire store attendant said it is normal to go through two sets of rear tires for each set of front tires on the Jaguar. Interestingly their were two other late model Jaguars besides mine getting tires.

Took my XJL in to my local Jaguar dealer today to have a four wheel alignment performed. I was notified I needed both front control arms replaced, to the tune of $1,300.00, after only 42,860 miles. I would think this contributed to my front tires wearing through to the cord in less than 10,000 miles where they should have lasted 40,000 miles.
I will update you after learning more. Grrrr!
