The question reminds me to a cute story; I used to be a long time BOD member of the US Lamborghini Club. Attended many events with them. The mostly self-made Lamborghini owners generally liked to display wealth, while the more conservative Ferrari owners were considered "old money". So, many Lambo members had decked out with plenty of diamonds/gold jewelry and fancy watches for the dinner events at the various Country Clubs.
During one dinner event at the Carmel Valley CC (owned by one of our Club members) I sat next to one of the wealthy member sporting a gaudy Rolex model, making sure it was visible to all sitting at the table. So, I pulled up my shirt-sleeve to show off my Tissot gold watch (thinnest mechanical watch made) on my left wrist and a fake Rolex on my right wrist. It did catch his attention and after a while he just had to ask why I was wearing two watches.
My casually sounding reply was: "Because I can afford them".
Should have seen the priceless expression on his face....ha...ha....ha...
These days I don't care about watches, usually wear none. Still have the Tissot hiding somewhere, only my wife would know where.

Well, when I retired after 40 years service in Oct 2011, I received £1000 worth of vouchers to spend on whatever. So I passed on some to my wife and daughter, but fancied a nice watch, (nothing toooo expensive, though). I ended up getting a Citizen Skyhawk Eco-Drive, with titanium case and strap, that cost about £500. Believe me, in my case that is a LOT to pay for a watch !
Anyway, this watch is time-controlled from the atomic clock transmitter at Frankfurt, plus it charges its batteries from sunlight. Also, having now learnt (a story in itself !!!), to set it to Daylight Saving mode, it automatically adjusts for British Summer Time.
I think this watch will see me out OK. I still have my old Casio that has the same features, but only cost about £90; it just doesn't look so good, but it is fascinating to see the second hands in synchronisation in the morning after timing update.

'Watches' are for those whose time is not their own to command.
Some may be 'rich'.
The luxury of not needing a watch, however, is part of being healthy and wealthy.
Not quite the same thing.

You stop at traffic lights don't you? Then, you are not in control of your own time either. No different than those who wear watches.
And, most wear it as an accoutrement.

I love watches a lot myself but I don't normally think about watch I am going to wear when I go driving. It's more about what I am wearing that dictates the watch. I have a few IWC's I like, a Breguet, Omega, Breitling, and a Patek Phillipe. I don't go for those super size watches because they are not my style. I'm more of a fan of craftsmanship and heritage than the new fad or what some celebrity is wearing.
