2004 xj8 transmission line leak

Default 2004 xj8 transmission line leak

Dealer just said I need to replace 2 transmission lines that are leaking. no fluid found under were I park my car.
I park the same place always. My car is a spring and summer car with 68,000. I keep it extremely clean inside and out and under the hood. they want 2k for that and a lower bushing. The car has been out of winter storage for 3 weeks and has no signs of shifting probelms or leaks. they found the leak during my yearly service today. any thoughts fron you guys.

What I'm about to say relates to cars in general and not necessarily our XJs.

Tranny lines generally refers to the fluid cooler lines that run to the radiator. These are not high pressure lines and can generally be repaired with a pressure patch (piece of hose and a small clamp). This assumes the leak is a pin hole or chafe type fault.

Sometimes you get a leak where the connector unions no longer seal That usually does require new lines.

A dealer serv operation is usually above such rough and ready fixes but most indies would do it for pennies on the dealer dollar.

That got my suspicion meter twitching...I have never heard of this car with leaking transmission lines and I can't imagine that replacing them could cost $2K. Get a second opinion to be sure. It is possible that lines could leak, and if they did, it could land in the undertray and not get on the pavement, but still $2000 sounds incredible to me.

If you saw the condition of my car and how clean I keep it well you would understand my suspicion. I keep an eye on my cars.

Generally with most leaks in and around the engine, the leak would blow back on the exhaust and you would smell something burning.

The other thing the dealer told me don't worry about driving it unless you see a puddle under the car? As soon as I told them I was not having the work done he asked if they lowered the price from $2100 to $1800 would I do the job, I said no.

Any tech's have comments?

Go fo rth esecond opinion. the only leaks I have heard of are pan gaskets and electronics sleeves at about 60K. these are common. If the sleeve is leaking, the fluid will run down onto the pan edge and look like something else.

I got mine replaced under warranty they were leaking from the connectors not a bad leak. I was told that this was a typical failure - though never read about this failure here. 2000 is ridiculous!!!

Mine developed a leak in one of the cooler lines where the rubber hose meets the metal portion that loops up over the suspension. Slight weep really....
I had it replaced by an indi shop with a Jag hose for not more than 200-300 as I recall. It was last year so I don't remember the amount.

Get another quote...

ANy half-decent workshop will take you into the workshop and show you what is needed. My local indie did this when I had to have rear lower wishbones and lower spring unit bushes. Gives you confidence they are not talking out their **se

2K is robbery. For under 1K you should be able to fix the transmission lines and replace the filter/pan/fluid service. Might as well do the whole thing and get it done at an indy shop.

Old thread I know but had to mention, had my trans pan changed today as had leak bought the parts myself from Klaus at the CTSC and supplied them to my local Jag dealer who then did the work. My tech is a 30 yr vet and I trust him, he asked me to come and look at the Trans lines both are leaking at the crimp joint rubber to metal ( modern production technique ) parts are under $200 but the labour is the problem as I saw the routing and the stuff that has to be removed is crazy! So in the end the bill will be $1000 we have no Indy Jag mechs in the Raleigh area so options are slim. The leaks are not bad and my XJR is not my daily driver so I will let things develop and see if I can get another 1000 miles out of them. I have had this issue on Landrovers, Range Rovers and Jeeps before so nothing new just wish that car companies would use male to female screw fitting on Rubber to metal pipes like in the old days but that is more expensive to produce. The pipes are only as good as the crimping machine.

Old thread but well timed revival. Our XJ supposedly has leaking lines as well, per our Jag dealer. If it is the crimp, is there a possible fix of cutting off the factory crimp, adding a new one from a donor section and splicing the new piece to the old line with rubber hose? This would make future service easier and save a bunch of labor pulling out the entire run of line.

Just some thoughts.

Default trans line leak

I just had my XJ towed to the dealer for a major coolant leak that came on all of a sudden. Just started out on a 700 mile road trip when the "low coolant" message came on, and yes I checked all fluid levels and pressure in the tyres before setting out. I turned right around, kitty did get us home, and took the wife's Mustang.

My warranty runs out in July and I have a few minor issues so I thought sending it to dealer to get checked out completely would be best.

One thing they tell me is kitty has a transmission line leak and it's not covered by my warranty and at a cost to me of $1500.00. Oh yes the coolant leak was one of the two hoses under the intake manifold and not covered under warranty $650.00

I always look under the car for any tell tails and have never seen any coolant or more important now trans fluid, so I told them not to do the tranny lines. I hope I'm not making a mistake.

To be fair to the dealer they are doing about $4500.00 dollars worth of repairs that are being covered by warranty.

Any input on the tranny lines would be appreciated.

Same trans line issue with mine. I bought it from Jag and replaced it myself. Not easy by any stretch but doable. Tell me there's not a defect. 04.R with 50 k.

As has been described elsewhere, the outer crimp sleeve usually covers an inner ferrule. If the outer crimp sleeve and hose is cut away, the remaining hose can be pushed onto the ferrule and secured by a good old fashioned hose clamp.

Mine is leaking too so I got new line just waiting to put it on.

I can't remember the exact number because I don't have the receipt with me but it's either 209 or 219 for the set from a dealer farther away from me. the dealer that is closer to me like maybe 2 miles away wanted 289 for it. So I drove 45 min to get it while going that way for a meal.
