I am the owner of a 2004 XJ I have been trying to find a used transmission I was told that I could only use a transmission from a 2004, can I adapt a transmission from a later model XJ,

 

You might have better fortune asking the group associated with that year AND model.
This forum is for the X-308 which is 2003 and below.

I have moved your post from the forum for the X308 to the forum for the X350, which is the Jaguar factory project code for your 2004 XJ8.

It should not be too difficult to find a ZF 6HP26 transmission from a 2004 Jaguar XJ. Have you tried the Pull-a-Part salvage yard in Louisville and others within driving distance, like Indianapolis? Or eBay, where many salvage yards post available parts, including large national salvagers like LKQ?

Can you tell us what the symptoms are with your current transmission that are prompting you to seek a new one?
