Default '97 XJ6L stalled out, now no start

Morning all!
My 97 CEL light came on the other day. It gave off P0300 & P1313 codes which I cleared & right when they came back, it stalled. Now it cranks up but won't start. I replaced the number 3 coil & regapped all the plugs. It seems to crank stronger now, but still won't start up. I was thinking a fuel issue. When I turn the key prior to start, shouldn't I hear the fuel pump priming in the rear? Any suggestions? Thank you!!!

So I replaced the plugs & coils, Checked the fuel flow at the rail (It pumps when the key is turned on) and it still cranks but doesn't fire. I'm thinking possibly the crankshaft sensor?

That's a good possibility.

So about three or four X300's ago I was enjoying the comforts of a rather smooth running 3.2 that put a smile on my face just thinking about driving. I was sat at the table reading my Kindle and I think my wife wanted to go somewhere but couldn't access the runaround, can't remember why not, so I said "Take the Jag" "Really???" she replied...I've never been one to be 'precious' over cars so said."Of course, might as well use it." Twas with trepidation that she ventured out onto the driveway and proceeded to start the car.......and this one was a sweet starter/never missed a beat and all that...but not today...it cranked and cranked and cranked...not to day my friend. "What have you done? You only had to turn the key." I said with a big grin..knowing I was going to get some mileage out of this.
Anyway, long story short, having no diagnostics tools of any description I went straight for the crank sensor, £18 on Ebay..fitted in 10 mins..turned the key and away she went. I'm sure there are a hundred and one possibilities and I most definitely got lucky. If it doesn't work it's good to have a spare.

Hi Jdogsofla,

The simple test for the crankshaft sensor (CKPS} is to watch the tachometer for about 200 rpm while cranking the engine. If the tach reads 0 rpm while cranking, the CKPS has probably failed.

The DTC Summaries Manual is a helpful diagnostic reference because it lists possible causes for each diagnostic trouble code. You can download the manual at this link:

Jaguar AJ16 DTC Summaries 1996 1997

For example, here are the listings for P0300 and P1313. Note that neither code is cylinder-specific, and of the possible causes the CKPS is one that affects all cylinders:

If the tach reads about 200 rpm, at least the ECM thinks the CKPS is working, so one of the next suspects might be the ignition coil relay, which is in the front right corner of the engine bay:

You can test for spark with a Coil-On-Plug tester or by pulling a coil and plug, connecting the coil to the harness, inserting the plug into the coil, grounding the plug body, then cranking the engine and watching for spark.

Cheers,

Don
