Can anyone offer a suggestion as to why my SPORT mode in my 96 xj6 (300) seems to be non functional even tho when the switch is hit it lights up on the dash..?

Why do you think that Sport Mode is disabled.
You only notice it during 'spirited driving'. Otherwise the gearbox shifts normally.

i guess the best way to describe it would be to say that I'm not feeling the kickdown as I would feel it in my other x300

Kickdown and sport mode are two different things, so just checking we are all talking about the same thing...

The "sport" mode simply keeps the transmission in a given gear for a slightly longer time (higher RPM) which adds a little top end RMP "zip" in each gear at the sacrifice of economy. In "normal" mode the transmission shifts earlier to increase economy and comfort.

If your car isn't downshifting (kickdown) on full throttle that is something different, and for that issue check out this recent thread for some info:

.

To be honest, it's pretty minor although feels slightly peppier.

Seems that I am not the only one with this problem. I appears that this may be a difficult one to troubleshoot

Ground point 10 goes through the troublesome BT4 connector above the fuel tank at pin # 12 not shown in this pic

See labeled pin # 13 on the pics top edge

# 12 will be just below # 13 and is Black / Pink color coded , The BT4 connector is mounted sideways . This connector type is used on 4 other areas of the car LS3 , RS3 ect

Do not remove this BT4 connector yet , A pain in the *** to get right and not damage

The car will not start with this BT4 connector removed

As installed the locator pin # A ( heavy gauge wire ) in the top left of the car location is X in color

See page 41
