Default 03 XJR with rainwater in gas fill well

Once again- I am hoping for input from the collective wisdom of the 308 team. We have a new (to us) 03 XJR that collects water in the well surrounding the gas fill neck in the back lid- no obvious weep/drain holes upon close inspection. No gasket under the lid or well rim. Any thoughts would be appreciated....

there should be a perforated tube thing sticking up from the corner close to the outside and back of the car, it could be missing but there should be a pretty sizeable drain hole there.

The well has a drain. When new they have a small periscope screen. It's a small cylinder with holes that allows water to flow into a tube -- the holes stop the tube from clogging.

Your periscope must be missing and dirt has accumulated in the tube -- a garden hose will clean it out .. the periscopes used to be available from the parts .. not very expensive.

Upon further investigation, PO did a rather magnificent job of filling the drain hole with black silicone. After prying out about a 3/4 inch plug....all is well in 308 world. I LOVE THIS GROUP! Thanks!

WOW filling the drain hole?????

You don't want any of that rain water draining from the fuel scupper area!!!!!!
Some people scare me.

You need to order the part called "FILTER" HNA3099BA in the JEPC.

Maybe the drain hose leaked/tore/got clogged up and they somehow thought that would fix the issue? Hope the fuel tank doesn't have water in it

A good guess is that it leaked into the trunk... Actually, you might want to check for that after removing the filler...

Actually talked to the PO- he said there was a gas smell and he thought the scupper drain was a gas tank vent....When I bought the car, one of the first things I replaced was the gas cap as it didn't seat properly and had lost it's ability to "park" in the lid when fueling....go figure!

It's important to keep the drain holes clear on any car. The ones on my Dad's MG ZT got blocked with dead leaves and such, which caused the scuttle to fill with water. Which submerged the ECU, which was destroyed and killed the car.

I keep a folded microfiber cloth over the fuel cap to
avoid the well from being filled with dead leaves,
and more importantly in winter to avoid the well
from being filled with snow and ice when refueling
time comes around.
