98 XJ8 Fuel Pump Question
Hey guys, New to the forum and Jag world. Just got my 98 xj8 Jag with 57k miles. Now at 62K it would not start. I changed the battery for fear of voltage (stupid me). A friend told me to check the schrader (sp) valve and no fuel was spitting out. He told me it was probaly a faulty fuel pump. Anything else I should check? Also I found the fuel pump in the trunk does not look that bad but I am not sure if I am not seeing the big picture. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any one know where to go from a forum sponsor for this?
Thanks

RE: 98 XJ8 Fuel Pump Question
I would check the relay first. Early Js and Ks had terrible relays. It is in the trunk fuse box... Picture a T on its side. Where the long part would meet the short part, that is the relay....lol. Sorry I can't put it better. Top of the long part where it joins the short part?
Anyway, swap that with another one temporarily. See if car starts then. Does it crank well? Does it drag when it cranks? Sound choked up at all?
Let us know.

RE: 98 XJ8 Fuel Pump Question
The car wants to start but it just does not kick over. No choking to my knowledgeIt just cranks but does not go over. My wife drove it on Saturday and then on Sunday dead. I checked the fuses in the trunk and they all seemed ok. How would I check the relays? Do i need to buy some or can i unplug one?

RE: 98 XJ8 Fuel Pump Question
Just went outside and checked the relays in the trunk. Looks like one has been replaced.

The relays looked like this above and I swapped out the first two in the second row. The car did not start. It is still wanting to crank but nothing.
I really do appreciate your help. My buddy called his mechanic and he is the one that told us to check the fuel pump out. I really dont want to replace if it is something simple. I thought I would ask here. thanks

RE: 98 XJ8 Fuel Pump Question
I just read your thread posting. The one thing is when we checked the schrader valve there was no pressure on it. What do I do from that point. I may have misread the thread posting but I thought he had pressure on that valve. Where is my next step from there?
I hope not to seem to ingnorant, I really do appreciate the help. Im a science guy but no auto science so all your help is very appreciated

Sorry I missed the part where you said no pressure on the valve. You really need to do fuel pressure test. I have seen the schraders stick so even when depressed, no fuel comes out.
From what you describe though, likely your friend is right and you need pump.

RE: 98 XJ8 Fuel Pump Question
The no pressure on that valve is what worried me. Is dropping the tank that complicated. If I can do it myself I will. My friends buddy said he would charge me three hours of labor for it but I like to get my hands dirty but I also know my limitations.
His mechanic did say to go and but the part but I do not want to tow it to him if I can do this with a friend. Any good places to get the fuel pump at? I am all about supporting the forums. What part of southern florida im near savannah ga (Bluffton SC).
Thanks Bud glad this forum has people whom want to help each other.

RE: 98 XJ8 Fuel Pump Question
The tank is in the trunk behind the carpet. Is not hard to get out, just hard to get the lines off from underneath, above the diff. If he only going to charge you 3 hours, I would say have him do it. Hard without a lift. Plus, the edges of tank are like razor blades. Easy to slice into the harness without you knowing it.

RE: 98 XJ8 Fuel Pump Question
LOL yea it was actually not easy for us. Removed the seats first lol. Then we traced it back to the trunk. Very interesting.
Now it is time to go find the fuel pump online. I will let you know how it all works out. Beleive me I will be asking if I have questions.
Thanks again
