Armrest Cupholder
Hello all
I have the pleasure of owning a 99 XJR.
When I bought the car, I noticed it was missing the cupholder assembly from the front part of the center console / armrest - I guess it's some sort of flip out / forward piece?
I have heard various versions of what I actually need to buy to replace this with costs ranging from as little as $100 to upwards of $500 (complete console armrest with cupholder). I got 2 different versions from (my otherwise excellent) dealer.
Any insights would be appreciated on:
a) What I actually need to buy,
b) What might be a good source for a used part

you XJR will require the complete cup-holder/armrest assembly , this is an armrest with a front section with a rolling forward cover which exposed two black plastic cup holders,
this unit simply replaces your existing armrest as a direct replacement,
they can be got from a main dealer, but can be expensive, or from ebay for a lot less, take caution, some are used, and are not in the best of condition, and some are brand new, demanding more money to obtain,
you will also need to match the trim colour of you interior,
some are matched by the whole interior, and some are matched to the dash top colour, your interior trim code can be deciphered for this,

It's not the best cupholder design I have seen. About six months after I bought my XJ8 mine broke. The plastic piece around one of the bottom pegs broke through. I bought the replacement kit (about $80 on eBay) and replaced it in about ten minutes.
If you want to see a really poor cupholder design, look at the Mini Cooper (current version) from inception to around 2003-04.The lone large cupholderprotrudes from the right side of the center column of the dash. It is mounted low on the column and it is secured to its mount by a plastic pin.It pivots from side to side. If you pivot it to the left, it collides with the shifter (a whole lot of fun if you have a five-speed like me). If you pivot it to the right, anyone getting out of the back seat can break it off by pushing the passenger seat too far forward. Mine broke off the day I brought the car home from someone getting out of the back seat, but Carmax graciously replaced it for free. It is not one of BMW's better ideas. Even better: There are two additional cupholders on the center tunnel on the floor, but they are positioned too far forward for anything but the very shortest cup to fit into (not to mention that the pivoting cupholder often partially overhangs the one on the right). Try to put anything even marginally tall into it andthe dash pushesthe topback toward you - and directly into the path of the shifter.
If I get especially industrious I will post a pic so you can see what I'm talking about.

Ok - how about some more details please? I can safely say that we all are or will have this cupholder issue and some might want to have; 1. reasonable fix, 2. a replacement armrest without cupholder, or 3. glue the sucker in permanently. So..........

LOL, from my knowledge, the only real difference between the X300 and X308 cupholders is that they are not interchangeable! Functionally, quite similar.
My X300 experience is that it will hold a cup quite nicely, as long as I do. But...you quit holding the cup...so does it. And Inertian...you don't have to shift with the lever to spill one...jus' leggo while the autobox is shifting and it will be happy to dump your drink aft with the pivot action.

They were designed for a time when people weren't taking super jumbo latte coffee jugs in the car with them, I find them quite useful and functional.
The idea is for a drinks can like Pepsi or a normal sized cup of coffee/Tea to sit in there, but these days the drinks are coming in stupid and unnecessary sizes which is why many drinks are spilt in cars.
Now I have in my garage a broken cup holder armrest that came into my possession and I have fixed it with a little bracket I made from a thin but strong bit of steel. They can be dismantled and fixed with ease.

All console lid assys 1988 to 2003 are interchangeable but the colors are not exact.
The 1993 to 2003 are all 'bolt on items' with cupholder (1988 to 2003 will all fit BOLT ON but the catches are different 'magnetic or plastic catch')
1988 to 1992 are MAGNETIC CATCH
1993 to 2003 are plastic lever catch
The catches can be interchanged.
The interior trim colors are different from model to model.
The cupholder repair kit comes in 2 different models.
1993 to 1999 with plastic hinges(GNA7692AA)
2000 to 2003 with metal hinges(GNF7692AA)
I have a 1992 XJ40 LDY trim code with an X300 console lid cupholder assy LJE. I wanted the cupholder that was NEVER in the 1992 car.
I had the console lid dyed the darker trim color and it looks great!!!
The XJ40 had the magnetic catches but can be fitted with plastic lever type catches.
Go to a salvage yard and look at all the console lids for the one that works the closest to your needs.

It seems a bit queer Jaguar would go this many years with the same design flaw and not come up with a good solution. Sure there are other manufactures that have similar problems but were their vehicles so expensive?

I used a general search for "Jaguar cup holder part; GNF7692AA" which brought up a number of places to purchase this metal replacement cupholder. Lowest prices was 75 British pounds and 174 Us dollars before shipping costs.
I will go with the metal unit and hope it will last as I plan on keeping this cat for a while.

I just posted in the X300 forum about the metal hinge cupholder repair kit for the early trim cover. Basically the metal hinges interfere with the correct fitment of the trim cover and the screw holes won't quiet line up.
The 2000MY console lids are different in that the have a 'bulge' in the trim cover for the metal hinge.
You might force it in place but it is not made to interchange.

Ok Stu - can you help some more - what did you actually do? Any photos? A template and instructions? Seems like you have the best solution. Thanks from all us frustrated cat owners.

It seems broken cup holders may be more common than chain tensioner failure!
The only good thing is you can get by with a broken cup holder. I did not know there were repair kits available, so that is good info. The price of them would encourage people to find an alternate fix.
Looking forward to your post Jeff. If you can rebuild your transmission, a cupholder should be a cake walk!
