Bad Compressor :(

Bad Compressor :(
Hey guys,
Its getting crazy hot in FL right now and not having a/c in my '99 XJR is becoming quite an issue. After trying to recharge my system only to hear it leaking out as quickly as it was going in, I took it to my mechanic so he could put it on the lift and find the problem, he says my condenser is leaking badly and since the pricetag wasn't too high got it fixed. Come back to pick it up and he said that when he backed it out, there was still dye leaking and after about an hour my a/c was back to blowing warm again
Diagnosis: bad compressor, pricetag: high
So I realize this is not a 'simple' fix but I wanted to know how difficult it really is (tutorial or personal experience would be nice) and also, I don't want to get an aftermarket compressor and have only been able to find them overseas. Is the anyone in the states that sells them?
Thanks in advance guys!

Only options are 2nd hand or rebuilt if you don't want to spent the till on new. XJ8/XK8/XJR/XKR all the same unit so shop around, they're generally long life items, you have turned the air con off, if giving it the beans? As instructed in the owners manual, on the XJR you've to do this.

Haven't had much luck with local junkyards, and most of them are the 'you-pull' type which sounds terrible between the part being buried within the car, the florida heat, and filthy junkyards. Doesn't sound fun. I'll gladly throw you some dough, will PM you soon. Thanks a lot, greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your reply Sean, what do mean exactly? Yes, I'm not running the a/c currently as it blows hot and always turn it off before turning my car off when it is functioning. I'll even let the car warm up sometimes before even turning it on. Maybe I baby my jag too much but she's worth it haha.

Okay my apologies guys but apparently I misinformed the masses.
My mechanic is a great dude but has a tendency to ramble and go off on tangents and I apparently have a tendency to zone out during said tangents...
I need an evaporator not a compressor.
Thoughts on repair? Anybody have one?
Thanks again!

Yeah, kind of figured as much
I realize this is a part I do not want to cheap out on and get it right the first time around but I already know this is going to be very expensive between parts/labor.
Does anybody know if there are any legit aftermarket evaps? Or is my best bet just to bite the bullet and get the OEM part?

Thanks for the tip Lear45, and will do!
My mechanic said he'd do a year warranty on parts/labor so that helps soften the blow a little. Also found a diagram of the repair procedure but what would take him a day would probably take me about a week or so with my schedule. Will probably just take the financial hit unfortunately
My steering wheel tilt, signal click, has also gone out and although I am just waiting on the parts, will probably just have that replaced along with expansion valve since everything will be torn down at that point anyways. Also going to have wiring checked as well for the same reasons. Might as well take care of everything while its all stripped down.

Jaguar evaporator
Jaguar Classic Parts has original for £429.79 (about $600?). Part number is JLM11944 according to them - try an Ebay search also.
I'd probably buy a 4 Seasons model if it was my car. And the dryer/accumulator, orifice tube, hoses if I was changing evaporator. Possibly the condenser and compressor also.
I'd also buy cheaper new aftermarket parts for a/c system over second hand original parts.
Find out what other maintenance or wear parts are worth changing if doing the evaporator. Perhaps heater core and hoses.
