'98 XJ8 VDP, 134K miles.

A few weeks ago my CD player (6 disc trunk mount) stopped playing CDs, shows "No Disc" message on the console even though the magazine is full. Seems this is a common problem, found something to try here:

So I opened up the CD changer unit and lubricated the gears. A CD is selected and moved over to area to be played, but it never starts to spin, so it is then moved back to the stack. Then the next one is loaded and returned, etc., until they are all gone through.

Bad motor? Dirty laser lens?

Any ideas welcome.

 

I tried all the above and still it read "No Disc"Ended up getting a unit off ebay for $90.
and put it in and I was good to go.

I messed with it some more last weekend (cleaning, lubricating, pushing on gears, etc.), got it to play one CD most of the way through and then it died again in the middle of another. No luck getting it going since.

Appreciate the link to the eBay changer. Only concern is that mine is a 1998 Made in Japan unit, Part # LNC4160AA, and the one on eBay is a 2000 Made in Hungary, Part # LNF4160AA. They look the same, but are they?

If not, there appear to be plenty of others on eBay that are the identical model.

No magic bullet here? Mine (2001 VDP) is showing the exact same symptoms. I'm going to try finding some sort of CD-unit cleaner but.. any suggestions most Welcome!

 

Looks like I'm going to need a replacement used (bunches on eBay) - but - how do I disconnect the thick connector cable once the replacement arrives? I ask because I tried to disconnect this cable to remove the original unit and could not uncouple it...

 

That cable has clips in it, so be careful disconnecting it! If you pull hard without regard for the clips they will bend and possibly break. The cable female and male are shaped / keyed so you can only rejpin them correctly. Be careful to visualize this pattern before you rejpin them. There is also a guiding line on each of the cable ends. The cable will still hold together once you re-join it as long as any broken or bent clips (they are very small) are removed or moved out of the way. Liely they will fall out if they break. Make sure you place the cable union back into the bracket along the back of the CD unit case and do not let it hang loose. This will keep it snug and together.

We are experiencing the same trouble with gradually failing CD changer function. We live in a cold climate and the CD changer seems to work better when it is warm. The trouble is ONLY with home-burned CD's. Manufactured music CD's work fine. So I have removed the unit, CAREFULLY spray lubed all moving parts, being careful not to spray into the area containing the laser and optical sensor. I used a light spray lithium designed for electronics use. The performance immediately improved, then it got cold again. I am confident that one more treatment will cure the issue. But, then again, it is almost summer....

 

Do a search for CD changer. You might have to look a bit but there's a fix that's worth trying before looking for another unit. You have to open the unit up (you seem comfortable with that). Basically you remove the 4 shock bushings and find the drive motor in the corner of the unit. The motor has a worm drive gear on it and over time the motor and gear get out of alignment with the mating gear. My CD changer gave me the same error when I bought the car. Pulled the Changer and found that the motor was out of line and the gear had bound. I put a little pressure with a small screwdriver on the motor housing to dislodge the gear- loosened a screw on the motor applied a bit of medium locktite and re-secured the motor with the gear engaged with the mating gear. Haven't had any issues since.

 

Forget the search, I just stumbled across the pdf. I found detailing the fix. I didn't realize I'd saved it.

We had our autochanger on our 2001 XJ8 replaced by our Jaguar dealership service in Dec 2007. It was covered by our 3rd party warantee. They replaced it with a rebuilt one from Jaguar parts department. The rebuit part number was LNF4160AAR and the net cost was $160 ($660 less $500 core return) for the autochanger.

You should check with your Jaguar dealership parts dept to see if the rebuilt units are still available.

Hey thanks for the kudos, but MIKO is the real hero. I have no idea now where I stumbled across that PDF, but I usually try to save any helpful resources I do find so I can refer back to them if needed. The worst part is that I never know which laptop I'm going to be on when I find something so it can be a challenge to go find them again. I need to consolodate all my files and drop them on a network hard drive so I have one place to go.

 

If the unit reads no disc it's either the fact that the disc isnt getting loaded on the turntable motor or the laser is getting weak and cant read the data any longer

 

Does anyone have a diagram how to remove CD Player from Trunk of 2004 Vanden Plas ? Also a 2001 XJR as my player seems a little funky too.

My wife's CD Player is giving the error message " No Discs " I pre-aligned first and last cd's title a certain way, inserted in player, got error message, and took out. CD's did not turn, so I am guessing motor is bad.

 

With cool weather in Wisconsin got the "No Disc" in changer error message on screen. Followed the above suggestions and removed the changer and opened it up. Cleaned and lubricated the moving parts similar to described above. I did notice dried white grease which I cleaned and re-lubricated. Rotated motors to sure everything was free and not binding or misaligned. Reinstalled the unit and works perfectly.

A couple of additional suggestions to remove the unit from the car:

You will need a Torx 30 driver, a Torx 20 1/4" drive socket, a 1/4" drive ratchet and a tool for removing "Christmas tree" trim fasteners.

1. First remove the trunk floor by removing Torx 30 bolts located in the rear of the spare tire cover inside the hold-down loops.
2. Turn the black knob a 1/4 turn located on the side panel to the left of the changer.
3. Open the changer cover and remove Grey "Christmas tree" fastener with tool. Remove large black "Christmas tree" fastener located on the top(ceiling of the trunk area) near the hinge.
4. Pull out the trunk side trim panel
5. To remove changer remove 4 small Torx 20 screws located on each side of changer with Torx 20 socket and ratchet.
6. Pull the unit outward carefully. The large dual fiber-optic cable is released by pushing down on the clip in the middle of the black side. The small plug does not have a clip and pulls straight out.
7. You can then disassemble the unit using a #1 Phillips screw driver.

I, like many others, have received this "No disc" message in my 2000 Vanden Plas. I have pulled the unit from the trunk, and applied white lithium grease (multiple times) inside the changer and achieved nothing. I tried taking it apart (fully) to fidget with the worm/wheel motor as the PDF had suggested, but it appears as if my changer is different from the one in the file. Any other suggestions, anyone?
