Default tensioner/chain write up

After the input from guys here I am taking the plunge and doing the whole front of the engine.

I bought everything from motorcarsltd.com and found their price even better than the ebay kit I was looking at.

I've tried a search and can't find a good write-up on the whole job, just the tensioners. i'm sure there is one here, can anybody help?

Thanks.

The upper tensioners are so often done that there are lots of pictorals on that subject and they are easy.

The primary ones, not so much. Removing the harmonic balancer is the real problem with the primary chains/tensioners.

Here are a couple links on the subject. One contains 200 posts . . . have fun.

Wes,

I sent you an e-mail and attached a very comprehensive write-up complete with photos. It should provide you with all the details you need for the entire chain job.

Good Luck with it

JWT,

If this is your original work perhaps we could find a way to make it a part of the FAQ stickies.

Default Tensioner write-up download

Its probably the same write-up that JWT emailed to you, but just in case, you can download the write-up I have here (I hate to share without giving proper credit, so if anyone knows the author of that write-up, please let me know.):

http://www.mediafire.com/file/mijhyd...imingchain.pdf

Also, I stole the file sharing idea from one of SuperSport's post, so thanks to him for the great idea. You can view/download my other jag related downloads here:

I will send a copy to you. I was not the author, and have attempted to find him, as it was an excellent job. Wanted to make sure it would be OK with him to post it. I do not recall exactly where I got it off the web, as it was a few months before I started the job.

I looked through the whole pdf and it really was a well documented write-up. I really would have liked to seen pics of the tool that holds the crankshaft steady. either way its definately a great write-up. I guess the original author can be contacted via the watermarked email address on all the photos.

JWT, if you find the original author, and he allows a reprint (with credit of course) I'll post the entire thing here in its own thread, and not a pdf.

Strate -- you can get a look at the setting plug at Ken's site:

http://www.motorcarsltd.com/jaguar-p...haft-tool.html

Or at Welsh Enterprises:

FYI - I located the author of the write-up and he happens to be a new member of this forum. I sent him a pm to request permission and suggest he contact a forum admin/moderator to discuss possibility of sharing the write-up.

read about 1/3 of that pdf and closed it up, not only did it scare the bugeezus out of me, most of those parts were WAY above my level of understanding. Thank the heavens I don't have to worry about those things. I hope I never have to do surgery to that extent...ever!!

Matt,

Sorry It tool me a while to get back to this.

I did not use his method to secure the crankshaft for removal of the centre bolt. I had the proper securing tool on loan from my dealer when I did the job on my car (XJR). I could not figure out where he put the pry-bar in the drive plate, however I have been told the XJR transmission is different than an XJ8. Do not confuse the setting plug for a crank securing device. It is only to be used when timing the camshafts in this job. If you have the setting plug installed while remving the centre bolt, you risk damaging the drive plate timing holes. The car will not run well at all if you do that. Actually, Chris the author does warn against that also. If you search Baum Tools on the web you can find pictures of all the tools I believe.

Regards

Wayne

If I remember correctly, I put the pry bar through a small hole on the opposite side of the crank position sensor and lodged it up against one of the torque converter to drive plate bolts. You may also be able to do this through the opening next to the crank position sensor (through which you can see the triangle), but I was afraid of damaging the timing ring through that opening as well. I have to get back under the car this weekend. If I think about it, I will try to set it up as I had it and take some photos for reference.
