Default I'm out of the XJR game...

Well, my heart is breaking a little. A 1998 Buick turned right in front of me while I was doing 55 mph. There was a State Trooper traveling behind me who saw the whole thing. He said there was no possible way I could have avoided hitting them and that he had clocked me doing exactly the speed limit just before it happened.

I really don't know what I'm going to do, but the whole frame appears bent so I'm feeling confident the car is totaled.

I have loved that car. We'll see what comes out of all of this I guess...

Edit - Air bags worked great by the way. The other car was damaged even worse. The passenger in the other car went to the hospital but I think she'll be ok. Considering how fast I was going I can't believe I was so easily able to get out of the car and walk away. Praise God!

Glad to hear you're OK Jeff. Hope the lady in the other car will be fine.

Sad to see your car like that. I know you had done a lot of work on it.

Best wishes, Bob

First off, really sorry ik what your going through. Second why are Buick drivers bad? (My 2004 XJ8 Total Loss! Awesome car! - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum). And what is going to happen now? All I hope is you buy another x308! I'm sorry for your precious lost, it just horrible, makes me sad. But guess what you can buy another XJR all that matters is that your ok, and I'm glad.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it....

I just sold my other "baby" a few weeks ago, the BMW convertible that I've pampered for the last nine years. The money from that sale is sitting in the bank while I was figuring out what to do with it. I'm curious to see what the insurance company will say the XJR was worth; certainly less than I have in it!

I would love to find a nice low mileage XJR, or maybe even a really nice 2002 or 2003 XKR coupe. Maybe I should just not buy another car. I'm still trying to think clearly. The accident happened a little after 6pm, about two hours ago.

Man. Sorry to hear that and glad you are OK. I just bought my XJR after a long search. I am going to PM you about an XJR that I saw for sale with low mileage.

Sorry to see this happen Jeff, as said, you got a lot of hours in her.
Take it easy for now, I am rather sure you will remain a member on this forum, be it older or newer, coupe or sedan.

That really sucks man! Sorry to hear all that hard work and money went down the drain with one persons (not yours) bad decision. Go get another X308 XJR.

Glad to read no major harm was down to the human cargo. Godspeed on replacing or rebuilding your beloved feline.

Glad you're okay. I hope the lady in the other car isn't hurt badly, either.

The people are the important thing, but it really is a bummer about the car, though.

Glad you're ok! Speaking from past experience with a similar occurrence, go with your gut instinct to get another one. You'll regret not having it the more you try to convince yourself you don't. I've been fortunate enough to still have my absolute favorite cars after many years and my latest dream was buying my 98 XJR. Good luck and hope you find a great new ride

Glad to hear your ok Jeff, ...please keep us updated on what the insurers determine. Be careful, many insurers will total a car simply from its age instead of the ability to repair it.

Glad you are Ok Jeff and I hope the lady in the Buick ends up ok.

Not bad tho to get out with no injury in a 55 mph crash.

Be prepared to battle the other car owners insurance company and do not settle too quickly.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone.

My insurance company said they are picking the car up and will make the determination themselves. From their conversation with my wife and myself they feel it's probably totaled. In my opinion the repairs would cost more than I could go buy a very nice replacement for. They said they will pay me for the car first and then they will pursue the other drivers insurance company for reimbursement.

Tahoemedic, you dialed right into my current dilemma. There is no practical reason to get another one. It was not a daily driver. My wife still has her Jag and I have a free company car 24/7. There is no practical or financial justification to get another one, but it makes me really sad to look in the garage at that empty space.

Old luxury cars are rarely worth fixing after an accident ... my perfect E Class Wagon with typical insurance was almost totaled with only needing front and rear bumpers.

With current values, picking up a perfect low mile 02-03 XJR or XKR coupe in the near future is not a bad strategy. I'm building a new house in PA and a XKR would be perfect to have there. I passed on a low mile black/black last summer -- thinking I should have purchased and paid to store it. They did not make as many coupes

That empty space needs to be filled. I don't allow myself to ever have an empty space in the garage. I've owned just about every brand of car and to be perfectly honest, the more I drive this XJR, the more I fall in love with the car. It has soul and spirit. My MBZ AMG was a quick SOB but it didn't have the soul my XJR has. Just my $0.02 worth but I think you should replace it with another XJR. Few cars come along in our lives that we absolutely fall in love with and will miss with them being gone.

Jeff,

Thankful no one was seriously injured. I am becoming more and more defensive in my driving everyday. It seems like nearly every other driver on the road is distracted and not paying proper attention to his or her driving. Heartbreaking to see the damage to your beautiful Jag.

An XKR coupe will be just the thing to help you get over the loss!

Cheers,

Don

I have been shopping around a bit, and the coupes are very hard to find. Anything I've found that would interest me is prohibitively far away. If I found a mint condition BRG XJR (2002 or 2003), or a BRG XKR coupe (2002 to 2007) then we would be in dream car territory.

Honestly though, if the maintenance is right on the car then the color is far less important. Except for the interior. It must be oatmeal interior. I bought the black XJR for a lower price because it needed work and I spent many many hours and a few thousand dollars getting her right. I don't want to do that this time. I would rather pay a little more and get one someone has truly taken car of so I can drive it. I don't mind doing the brakes or maybe servicing the transmission, but I don't want a ton of things to have to "fix" to make the car right.

I think I have to shop for a new Jag though. If I don't, I will have to experience the grief of losing my XJR. Looking for a replacement is a welcome distraction.
