Default Installing 1999 XJ8 -VDP Shock Tower bushings without a BFH

This is a method of removing the old orange/yellow shock bushings on
a 1999 Jaguar VDP without using the BFH(Big F$%#& Hammer) method.

Tools required:
A. floor jack to jack the front tire up
B. 14mm wrench to remove the Shock strut nut
C. adjustable wrench to hold the Shock strut in place
D. 13mm socket and socket wrench to remove the Shock Tower assembly
E. bearing puller (3 arm version works best) to pull the bushing holder apart.
F. small bolt ( 9mm (3/8")works best) to push the bushing holders apart.
G. 2-1/2” bolt and nut with washer to compress the bushing holders together.
Parts:
A: Upper Shock Bushing Kit for Jaguar XJ8 1998 - 2002
Sources: Ebay, Amazon, etc....

Procedure:

1. Jack the front drivers/passenger side tire up using the front jack point
until the front shock strut is pulling the bushing down.
Please chock your rear tire(s) for safety.

2. Remove the shock strut nut using a 14mm wrench and an adjustable
wrench on the strut flat spot to keep it from turning.

3. Remove the strut tower assembly by removing 6 bolts using a 13mm socket
and pulling the entire tower unit from the fender body.

4. Clean the residue from the old shock from the fender.

5. Orient the tower assembly so that the beveled washer is up and
place the 9mm(3/8") bolt into the bushing top washer.
The bushing top washer is beveled and is the receiver
for the bottom bushing bolt assembly.
You will be pushing the bottom bolt out of the top bushing holder.

6. Place the bearing remover/puller drive screw into contact with the top of the 9mm bolt head.
Fix the bearing puller arms onto the top washer and drive the puller drive screw into the 9mm bolt to remove the top bushing washer.
Remove the bearing puller when the bushing holder is separated.

7. Use a knife or chisel to remove the old bushing residue on the top
and bottom of the tower bracket and clean the surfaces of the top washer
and the bottom washer assemblies.

8. Install the new bushings on the bushing holder into the shock tower.
Insert the bottom washer bushing holder with the new bushing into the shock
tower from the bottom and mate it with the top washer and bushing holder on
the top of the shock tower.

9. Insert the 2-1/2” bolt into the bushing holder assembly and using a
washer and nut to compress the top bushing holder back into the bottom
bushing holder assembly.

10. Take the refurbished shock tower assembly and install it on the
Shock Strut and fasten the Tower back down using the 6 bolts.
Hint: You can fasten the Shock Strut to the new Tower assembly and
push it down to install the 6 bolts.
Or you can jack the car up more to get the Shock Strut to a height that will
allow the Shock Tower bolts to be installed with no effort.

Repeat the above process for the other Tower.
