What it all means is that you remove your license plate and behind it you will see a circular sticker over a hole, open it. What Newuser is saying is that he used a flat screwdriver and pushed lightly on a small metal tab and the trunk opened.

You may need to read the entire post to understand further.

I must assume that the car doors are locked? What year is your car?

The hole is where the screw for the license plate would go (bottom right). You have to remove the plastic piece that has the tread for the screw and once removed there will be a small slot. Note, my car didn't have the hole nor the plastic piece either because it was removed and painted over and the paint was covering the hole! So i just poked the hole with my finger to remove the paint and there it was. If you need details on how to get it open read what I did on the link above or email me.

Locked my keys in trunk 2000 XJ8. Called locksmith. After 2 1/2 hrs of messing up my trunk release switch to the right of the steering column he said he would have to go through the back seat, or, drill the lock. I went into panic mode, and told him to hold off until I checked the forum. I found the 'behind the license plate' fix on the forum. In short, I taught him how to open the trunk of a 2000 XJ8. My car had a horizontal oval window to the right license plate screw hole. I popped out the plastic on both sides, flashlight to the left hole, screwdriver to the right hole, went fishing and "pop", the trunk opened. If you try this method, be patient, it WILL work. Because of the double lock when the alarm is armed, drilling the lock won't help, it will only ruin your lock. Trying an external power source to the inside trunk release switch risks computer damage/confusion and also does not work. Save yourself some time and money by doing it this way yourself. You can do it. Do not pay a locksmith or a dealer for a method you can do in 2 minutes. They will do the same thing and charge you hundreds of dollars. This forum is the most valuable tool a Jaguar owner can have. It works by asking questions and by posting our fixes. If you have a question on this forum and you find an answer like I did, make sure you post your fix so others can gain from your experience.
