Default Sun roof repair

Removed my sun roof today and found that on one side the slide that moves in the track and is attached to the cable has a broken casting that I think is made of aluminum or pot metal. Looks like the whole cable might need replacing as I see no way of removing it. Question is were do I find parts for the sun roof and are other years and models compatible.
Thanks
Bill

All sliding roof 'tilt/slide' mechanisms are the same for the X300 and the X308 (1995-2003) You will need either HNA1752AA (RH) or HNA1753AA (LH). You lower the sliding roof frame and slide the broken one out the back and install the new one on the cable. Search the archives.

There is no other way to replace the tilt/ slide mechanisms, unfortunately. Headliner down.

I have a problem with the right side lift and tilt for sure, as I can see that some of the plastic parts are broken. I don't want to take the car apart without the replacement parts ready to go. Generally, does one side go? Or do both go? Also, I am contemplating recovering the headliner board while it is out. There is a little sag in the rear. I take it that I can't simply peel off the existing headliner, shoot some spray adhesive in there and smooth it back down?

The foam backing to the headliner tends to stick to the board so spraying adhesibe will most likely bleed through. I went to joann fabrics and got grey headliner material (1/4", factory uses 1/8" but i didnt have a problem with fitting). Once the old fabric is removed i lightly sanded the board with 220 grit to remove the old foam backing residue. I then layed the material out to check fitment and cut a hole for the sunroof ( leave plenty of hang over!). Then started from the rear of the headliner by spraying 3m 76 adhesive on the board and the fabric (1/3 at a time). Leave fabric and board seperate an allow adhesive to get tacky for 15 minutes then combine, do not stretch material to fit but make sure there are no wrinkles. I did the sunroof panels first to practice. Make sure to spray edges and fold fabric over using same 15 minutes rule. Do not fold sunroof over lap over it needs o be folded and adhered to the metal roof and the sunroof fabric seal will cover it ( i made that mistake, if you dont understand this step pay close attebtion when removing board from car). Another interesting note if you have down time between headliner in car atleast put skinny sunroof panel back in it acts as a rain diverter!

If your worried just use the headliner repair buttons to tuck sag back up. If I had to do it again its probably what I would do.

Redoing the head liner is a easy task and can be done in a couple hours, but while it is out that is a good time to drop your sun roof frame and replace the parts that are needed. There are four hoses that run down from the four corners and you might want to blow some air through them to make sure they are clear. Remember the cover is not water proof and as some water drips in it is channeled to the four hoses and exits under the car. There is another post on how to reset the closing motor.
Good luck

I just fixed the sunroof on my car. Bought another broken sunroof assembly on CL for $60 and used the parts I needed to fix mine. I do have a lot of extra pieces from the roof that I did not use, if you take pictures and I do happen to have the pieces you need, i can sell them to you cheap.

Hi Bob,

I just got an 1997 XJ6, but I can't get the sun roof open to even see what the problem is. It seems to be off track or something. It moves a little. Any ideas on how to remove the liner covering the sun roof so I can get access to it. I would really appreciate an assistance!

Thanks,

Hugh

How bad is removing the headliner? I have a bum sunroof, but a perfect used one sitting in the garage. I've just been dragging my feet on replacement as I don't much feel like pulling down the headliner. Sounds like it's maybe not that bad?

If I remember right,to remove the sunroof liner you just open it a bit and remove the two screws on each side holding the cover,as for removing the head liner read my earliest post. It is not a big job, I removed mine and replaced the fabric and reinstalled in one Sat. morning.
Good luck

Default Sunroof liner detached

I have a 2000 Jaguar XJ8 Vanden Plas, which I got a great deal on. The sunroof liner appears to have come detached and stuck back in the sunroof channel. I have been only able to pull it half way out. Is there a trick to getting it back out? And... is there a way to get it reattached without removing the headliner?

I have the same issue and will consider alternate methods of attaching the trailing section to the mail panel. I am considering attaching son nylon tape with an adhesive to both parts. The push back is no problem, it the return to the closed position where the short section remains in the roof cavity. I just used a bent coat hanger to retrieve the section once it stayed back in the roof.

I have also considered 3D printing the replacement parts if I had a image of the connecting parts, no evidence of the original part in my car.

Want to know my suggestion for this issue? Remove that plastic screw that retains the overhead console unit, pull that down, unplug the connector to the sunroof motor, unscrew the sunroof motor and take it out..

Then apply sealant to your sunroof and close it for good. Problem solved!

Oh, and throw away that crappy plastic retaining screw and drill two holes for metal screws.

In case they are helpful to future readers of this thread, below are links to photos of two sunroof repairs I've performed on our '93 VDP:

Headliner recovering (sorry I didn't get photos of removing and reinstalling the headliner board but my hands were full - the Jaguar instructions are easy to follow):

Sometime after having my headliner replaced I noticed the tilt mechanism in my 2002 XJR would only crack open. I don't know that the events are related, but I finally got the courage up to investigate the problem. I found the spring from the right side bell crank lever arm was out of place and blocking the mechanism. I was able to push it out of the way, and the tilt now works. W/o the right side spring in place, the bell crank arms on both sides, which hold up the inner panel pop loose and the inner panel does not raise. Furthermore, ominous popping noises occur when opening/closing the roof. I fear at some point, something really bad will happen.

My question is, can the inner sunroof panel be removed w/o taking the headliner back out? I'd like to see if I can seat or replace the bell crank spring get the sunroof back to 100% functionality.
