Default Supercharger problem?

Had my XJR in at a local European car specialty shop for fuel pumps. The mechanic directed my attention to an “interesting” noise the engine is making. The noise seems to only happen when the supercharger is changing its RPM.

I made a video of the situation; does anyone know if this is definitely a supercharger related issue?

Car is a 2002 XJR
68,000 miles

the noise is the "clanking" right at start up and at the beginning of the engine revs.

I would disconnect the SC and make sure it the source of the noise - they are normally robust

"clanking"? as in a bicycle chain rubbing against a chain guard?

That would be cam tensioners/chain.

The supercharger does not change speed independently of the engine. So, it could be anything changing speed.

On the other hand, if it is at the supercharger drive snout, it is the supercharger drive. Rebuild kits are available.

Yep, drop the SC belt off to confirm - the engine will run without issues with the SC disconnected, if the noise isn't there, you can assume its the charger - your model year hopefully means your engine has metal tensioners, so we could rule out timing parts making the noise, possibly....

Is the noise more prevalent when it comes off revs? If so you'll need one of these fitting....it's the one thing that can cause this kind of noise. The coupler.

On the front of the top rotor. If you have to ask, leave it to the experts.

I use these type of couplers to repair the Eaton M112. The M90 uses the same coupler.

thank you for the replies

I removed the supercharger belt, fired it up and it didn't make the noise.

Looks like I'll be removing the supercharger and putting a new coupler in there or mailing my supercharger somewhere to let them do it.

this whole operation was a pain, but it's out. it's interesting how there are coolant lines into the throttle body and 3 coolant hoses under the supercharger, wiring clips everywhere, and many vacuum lines.

SC doesn't seem to be in too bad of shape

Do yourself a favor and replace the coolant heater hoses in the engine 'valley' before reinstalling the intake system.

Did you take any pictures of the hoses -- always wondered what it looked like under there!

Replacing the hoses sounds like a good idea .........

I can also post some more if you want to see anything in particular as I took a ton of pics and they are not all in the thread.

I think I will replace the hoses, I don't want to go through the supercharger removal process again.

And go with what adam 699 can give you, I won't be around the car again until thanksgiving sadly

Plums, where can I purchase a rebuild kit for a 2003 XJR Supercharger?

Go to UK Ebay and buy yourself IMO a 3lb stainless steel pulley and have PSE put it on for you and have them rebuild the SC.

Default Supercharger rattle

JagXJR02,
What was the final resolution to your supercharger noise? Did you have it rebuilt, and if so, did they find a definite problem? I now have the exact same noise as your original posted video on my 02 XKR.
Thanks
