Ok So yesterday i was bored as hell at my house so I took it upon myself to get the speaker out of my 1999 XJ8. There has been conflicts on websites and forums about the size of the all four speakers. But I finally have the real answer. First in order to get the speakers remove you need to remove the door panels. There is a screw behind the door handle and a long screw under the arm rest. The original speakers are 6.5 inches. even though the speaker's grill is about 5.25. But remember the cover is on top of the door panel cover therefore it looks like there are small speakers behind this Harmon Kardon branded cover. Anyways i was able to fit confortably a Kenwood eXcelon KFC-X173 6.5" Round 2-way 2-Speaker System. The Magnet is a lot bigger compared to the originals but still was able to fit perfect. Below is a website that you can get these speakers at a competive price. You have their asking price then you click on the " lowest price guaranteed" button and hyou get these 1 pair ofspeaker at such affordable price. So far I bought the speakers from 6th ave electronics for 83.00 sale price but it was worth the extra money just to see if the speakers fitted correctly. Last night i bought the same speakers from the website below at 62 bucks and FREE S/H!
Now I need to know what size is the one rear window speaker. Yes only one speaker. If anyone knows the answer let me know. Thanks !

my guess is that 'single' speaker (sub) in the parcel shelf (I assume that is what you are referring to?) will be a very odd size.

In my 2000 XJ it's a 6x9 dual voice coil subwoofer. Not too easy to find a drop in replacement.

Mine had a fried surround when I bought the car. I rebuilt it with a surround kit from SpeakerWorks.com - around $10, worked perfectly... I've used their surround repair kits to rebuild everthing from car speakers to my old Bose 901 home systems.

How do you removed the speakers? from the top or the bottom?

removing the subwoofer in the parcel shelf is kind of a pain, I did it about a month ago to replace my busted subwoofer.
You have to remove the entire rear seat bottom and the entire rear seat back. you also have to unbolt the seat belts and if you have rear heated seats you have to unclip the wiring harness.
then you have to remove the parcel shelf deck, which they claim you can "bend" it over the seat belt coils but I didn't think that was reasonable so I just unbolted the seatbelt coils. I also removed the paneling around the little rear side windows so I could get the rear deck out with less issue. Also it is a good idea to remove the plastic cover from the third brake light in my opinion.

Yes, it is a bit of a pain, but I've done it twice now (once to repair the sub and the second to run wires for an AUX input to the CD changer and a Sirius antenna) and the second time was much faster. The parcel shelf removed over the seat belt recoil mechanisms with no issue for me, nor did I remove the side paneling. Only had to remove the child seat safety strap hangers from the shelf, the plastic cover over the third brake light.

The rear seat back is easy - remove the bolts (4), pull up the plastic feeds for the seatbelts from the top rear of the seat back, then tip the seat back forward - leave the seatbelts in place coming through the seat back top slots... the belts just unreel.

It is definitely a 6x9 with dual voice coils, the surround repair kit I referenced above fit perfectly.

 

Thanks for the info. I guess i can make time to this this upcoming weekend. I will keep you posted how it went. I might as well put the AUX cables while i am at it even though i am using the take deck (cables) for my ipod.

 

Tape deck cables? You mean you're running the iPod thru a cassette adaptor? Direct connection (through the AUX mod) will make a huge difference in fidelity.
