Default Headrest lights

I have a 1991 Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign and the passenger seat headrest light will not shut off when I exit the vehicle and it kills my battery. How do I get it to shut off? What controls it?

Welcome to the forum 1TIIME,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to XJ40forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Hi 1TIIME,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums!

The headrest lights receive battery power to one of the bulb's terminals at all times from fuse C2 in the right fuse box. They are illuminated by connecting the other bulb terminal to ground via one of two paths. One path is via the Central Processing Unit on the firewall behind the glove box, which illuminates the lights when a door is opened, when the doors are unlocked via a remote control, etc.

The other means of connecting the bulb to ground is by the manual switch on the lamp itself. Is it possible that the switch on your passenger headrest lamp has been inadvertently switched on? You can compare the position of the switch tab with the lamp in the other headrest.

If the switch is in the off position, but the lamp is still illuminated, I would think the most likely causes would be a malfunction of the switch, which I haven't looked at in many years but recall was a very simple mechanism made of plastic; or, the bulb or one of its two ground wires could be shorted to ground somehow.

You can download the 1991 XJ Electrical Guide at the link below, and the Interior Lighting schematic is on Figure 9:

Cheers,

Don
